Hi guys, my friend wants some help for a tear around car with!

£6,500 is his max budget, he's been looking at golf GTI's. Doesn't really care about MPG as it's not used for commuting.

He wants a sporty motor, any recommendations? Doesn't want an old car either.

If he wants a sporty motor, and isn't commuting, does he actually need a hatch?

Plenty of sporty (genuinely, rather than a hatch with tat) stuff out there for £6,500.

Does he have any requirements other than "sporty"? Or is this a case where someone has already decided what car they want, and all they are looking for is reassurance?

The only thing to be wary of with the old TT is that the 1.8T is a fickle beast. They love to throw up engine management lights, they have problems with coil packs, cam-chain tensioners, and oil-pickups.

With a budget of £6-6.5k, I'm not sure Id wan't the potential hassle that an older TT could throw up. Doesn't this also negate his "doesn't want an old car" requirement?

I think I'd be more inclined to have this over a MK1 TT.

I'd be tempted to get an RX8 for about half that, and keep the rest on hand in case of engine troubles.

(Although, to add; that sort of suggestion is the danger of such an open-ended thread as this, its all personal preference after all)

He did just send me a picture of the old Audi TT, so I guess a hatch back doesn't matter that much.

The old TT is a hatchback.

Problem with these threads is that they basically suck. It's hard to recommend cars for somebody who isn't part of the conversation, so all it turns out being is a thread full of people calling out random car names with no real logic to it.

And then the OP updates days later informing us that his friend bought a car which no one mentioned and didn't fit the original requirements.

1.8t is the biggest doddle of an engine ever
