Expats - Lagos

My friends from over there seem to think white guys get one fine and are mostly welcomed. The only complaint they had were too the ones who spent all their times in the expat communities.

So seems to be like most places in the world, try to integrate a bit and it should be ok.

Oh and they love Guinness, which is a big plus.

Never been myself but know quite a few people who work on rotation in Nigeria and Lagos specifically. You live in a compound and have no real interaction with the outside world. None of them have been kidnapped or murdered. They didn't complain too much because they are only there for money, which is what they got at the end. Everything is provided for obviously.
That said kidnappings and murders can happen; someone I worked with in Kazakhstan was shot at whilst in a compound just outside Lagos (when a group of so called terrorists broke in) and locked himself in a cupboard until security arrived). So compounds are not the impenetrable fortresses companies make them out to be.

Ok, following on from this, just wondering if any of you guys know websites for current contract rates in the region? Coming up to the point of discussing money...........

Cheers,

I was there 2 years ago as a pipeline design engineer, £80k/yr and your costs are tiny. Apparently security was rubbish then, never had any trouble - apparently it's much better now, thinking of going back.

Really? For 80k? I take it you went as staff?

One of my customers has an office based in Lagos (oil company) and they send people from here over there all the time with no issues. I believe they are covered by security when travelling as when I did a job for them in Erbil, Iraq I was escorted everywhere by armed security as they take no chances.
