Nokia Lumia 820

Say hello to the Lumia 920's smaller, more available sibling. While the 920 seems to be a tad picky about it's partners, the 820 is an utter whore - available to anyone willing to stump up the dollars. Possibly great news for us? While she might not be quite so beautiful or be capable of the same exotic tricks, maybe she's 'good enough' for the task.

SPECS

4.3" AMOLED Display, 800x480 resolution, Clear Black & Super-Sensitive Display technology
1.5GHz Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4
1GB RAM
8GB Storage
MicroSD Card Slot (up to 64GB)
8MP Rear Camera with Carl Zeiss Optics
VGA Front Facing Camera
Dolby Headphone sound
1650mAh removable battery
Changeable 'Shell' casing

'SHELL' CASES

The Lumia 820 can be customised with a variety of 'Shells' (back plates), serving a number of functions:

High Gloss Colours: Red, Yellow, Cyan, Purple and White

Matte Finish: Grey and Black

Wireless Charging Shell: Matte finish only, White, Yellow, Black, Red and Cyan.

Ruggedised Shells: Matte finish, yellow, orange and green, all with a black trim.

UK handsets are confirmed to have a Wireless Charging Shell included in the box. Presumably they will also come with the appropriate High Gloss or Matte Finish Shell, depending on the colour chosen.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The SIM-Free price of the Nokia Lumia 820 is £379.99. At launch on November 7th, Black, White, Red and Yellow handsets will be available. EE, Orange, T Mobile, O2, Phones4U, Carphone Warehouse and Tesco Phone Shop are confirmed to be stocking the handset. Pre-Orders were open at Carphone Warehouse, where the handset was available free on contracts starting at £29/month, with a free wireless charging plate included. The listing has since disappeared from Carphone Warehouse's site.

A lot of comparisons will be made between the Nokia Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8X by HTC, so to make things easier:

The 920 has an 8.7MP camera with OIS and Pureview image processing, a 4.7" 1280x768 resolution Puremotion HD+ (60Hz) display with Clear Black Display 2technology, 32GB of storage and wireless charging built-in.
The 920 lacks a user-removable battery, you can't exchange the backplates or upgrade the storage (no microSD). The 820 is £80 cheaper SIM-free and more widely available.

The 8X has a 1280x720 resolution display, 2.1MP rear camera, 16GB of built-in storage and Beats headphone integration (a more powerful headphone amp built in to the phone).
The 8X lacks the Super-Sensitive Touch display, removable battery, changeable backplates and microSD card slot. The 820 is £20 cheaper SIM-Free.

It supports upto 64GB sd card - this is very tempting with the lack of 64Gb lumia 920

They're also going to release ruggedized covers

Swappable battery is also very tempting, you can bet your behind, there will be massive capacity battery's available within weeks.

But screen resolution does concern me, but will go have a hands on try when they're in shops. Wy can't it be 720p like the 8s

But 8s doesn't have enough storage, yes it has sd card. But you can not instal apps on to sd card. It also only has 512mb of ram. Lack of ram really annoys me on ipad.

I'm waiting for impressions of how the display performs in direct sunlight next to the 920. Nokia were boasting about CBD2's performance in direct sunlight, and it piqued my interest - I find it a problem too often. I don't believe the 820 has CBD2 - as far as I can tell it's the same CBD seen on the 900.

The camera is unfortunate, but the 920's camera isn't 'good enough' any way. It's a nice to have. The 808's camera, however unrealistic it would be to expect it in a WP8 flagship, is the one I'd want to have.

The 8s does not have a HD screen. It is the same as the Lumia 820 at 800x480.

Oops. Keep getting the 920's screen size muddled (probably because the handset is as big as most 4.7 inches). Meant to put front camera on the 8X, obvs - no way would it have a 2.1MP rear. Will edit later, off out now.

chose this as an upgrade from my ageing Desire HD and have to say im impressed so far :D
very responsive and smooth, loving some of the apps although havent found all the replacements id like :(
annoying that i cant have a custom message tone
dont really notice the low resolution that much when in operation
mine came with the wireless back shell which was nice should i choose to get a wireless charger :)

Glad you're liking it. I actually prefer my 820 over my 920. Just 'feels' nicer in the hand to me.

ok, so i have had this for a few weeks now, like it a lot but not so keen on the headphones (lack of a remote) that came with it. can anyone suggest anything (not overly expensive) that will allow me to skip tracks and adjust volume

ok will take a look. also, has anyone else had this issue with the 'other' folder part of the storage?
10MB music+video
2MB pictures
385MB apps
1.7GB other

as you can see, very little on phone. i have the england map downloaded and 1 email account synced which doesnt have much mail in it. have read lots of people have similar problems but no fix.

Yeah it's a known MSFT problem I think.

is there any news on a fix, i have to remove pretty much all apps to install a game then i can reinstall all the apps again, it looks like its using it to uncompress to the download when it installs. it a pain to say the least, be nice if you could use the SD card for the temp files and leave the 6GB (after os and essential apps) for other apps. seems like no one actually tested it before release.

i did find this morning

http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2013/03/06/new-nokia-lumia-920-firmware-adds-new-storage-management-feature-to-windows-phone-8/

The big change though came a few hours later when the latest version of Nokia’s Extras+Info app was pushed to my handset. This activated a brand new feature named storage check which allows you to check your device’s storage (space used by apps, media, system etc) and also clear Temporary files as see in the screenshots above. There’s no denying that this feature will come in handy to all users who have been experiencing issues installing huge apps like Asphalt 7 Heat which requires a boatload to on-board storage for the whole installation process. Nokia’s been doing a awesome job supporting WP8 as usual..
this was for the lumia 920, hopefully the 820 will get it to.
