Well I am in the market for a new GPU and my preferential gaming res will be 2560x1440 (DellU2713HM). Im running a 2600k at 4.5 stable and 8 gig Crucial Ballistix. I have no intention on doing multi screen gaming.

My options:

1 x GTX 680
1 x 7970 GHZ
1 x Titan
1 x GTX 690
2 x 7950 Boost Xfire

Not really interested in Xfire 7970 or Sli 680 or 2 x 660.

I can't "really" afford the Titan or 690 but I am rewarding myself after battling through a really awful last couple of weeks so I do not care (maybe a little) about the £££££'s.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I'm running same monitor on a GTX 580.

I was a little worried coming from 1080P but so far I havn't really noticed any issues in the games I play i.e Skyrim, Sleeping Dogs, Farcry3 etc.

Tend to run high res texture packs where possible and not seeing any problems with FPS or memory usage at 2 x MSAA/FXAA, which is really all you need at 1440P res.

So, in answer to your question and if i had felt the need for a new GPU, which I don't, and factoring in cost, I would probably go for the AMD 7950 which can be had for amazing prices at the moment:)

Most performance 2 x HD 7950s
Nicest GTX 690

When using the Titan and GTX 690 they feel very similar but the GTX 690 is faster @1440p

A single GTX 680/HD 7970 is not quite enough @1440p

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have been thinking the same thing was was considering 2 of these:

One thing I should mention, I am running the Seasonic X-Series 850 Watt PSU. I see they "suggest" 500w per card on the gigabyte website for the 7950!?!

As above 850w is fine.

If you are considering that HIS card then tbh I'd spend an extra tenner per card and get:

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £299.99 (£599.98)
Total : £611.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

I know you said you didn't want 7970CF but for £20 more it makes sense to me.

Right, so it comes down to a 690, a Titan or 2 of the 7970 Windforce cards (thanks Wu Tang for suggesting those). I think a pot of tea and a honey soaked crumpet should help me decide how best to spend more of this Master Card chaps money :-).

Hi
Why not buy a single 7950/70 & see how it goes.

I think you will be quite surprised at the results you get.:)

Can I ask, regarding my 850W psu, I know a couple of you have said it would be fine with 2 x 7950 but with 2 x 7970 would I be pushing it? I still may just buy a single gpu but I think the minimum I would go to is the 7970. Is the 7970 preferable to the 680? I'm coming from a 470 which has unfortunately gone kaput! Whatever I buy, it will be my gpu for at least 2 years.

I have a similar spec pc with a 7950wf and to be honest it's played everything so far pretty brilliantly at that resolution.

Try one and see how it fares for you.

Your 850w seasonic is more than enough for 2x HD7970 ! no worries at all.

+1

Good advice. You may find that you don't need much AA at that res, so one may suffice. Besides, you can always overclock it if need be.

Well, odd turn of events. I have been offered an MSI GTX680 Lightning second hand for £290 with 4 months warranty left from someone on my book of faces. Is that a good deal? I have a 7970 Windforce GHZ in my basket ready to buy complete with 12 months warranty from OCUK. Is the MSI a good card? I see the 7970 version is £499!!!

I would stick with two 7950's.

The 7970 is expensive as I believe it is now out of production.

The single 680 is a great card at 1080p not sure it has the legs for 1440p in all situations.

They'll both do you justice mate.
Not sure on the OC potential of the Windforce due to voltage locking stuff, but I can tell you that my current 7970 @1200/1650 is rocking 70-100+fps in BF3 64 player, fully maxed out @1080p if that helps :)

Can't see either card card letting you down tbh and £290 seems pretty fair for a lightning 680 with a bit of warranty left on it. I'd probably swing towards the 7970 @1440p though.
2 x 7950's would be very tempting.
