It does make me sick that a whole generation of kids (and some adults...) have grown up saying " i totally raped you" and stuff like that when playing computer games.

Its the one thing that winds me up the most about online gaming, not that i lose much cos im "all pr0" but the use of that word in that context is abhorrent.

off topic but .. god i hate you all :P

Getting all upset about the use of a word, oh dear. Do you also go mental when people use 'gay' in a totally non derogatory sense?

No, that'd be gay getting raped by a word like that.

The initialization at my uni for rugby was to stand in a circle naked and drink the other members pee.
I am not surprised that these people get up to these things.

Did you actually do it? =/

If you look at the history of the word, it's not inappropriate.

come on dont be that guy i hate :)

You think the average 15goingon30 year old sits there and studies the etymology of it?

I prefer to be "owned" than "raped."

one is horrifically sexual and the other is to be possessed..:p

Why is it abhorrent in that context?

Would you find the following phrases abhorrent too:

'I could murder a curry'

'I could kill my Boss right now'

'We destroyed you on Saturday' (referring to some football match)

I mean are murder, killing, destruction OK to be used in a different context but 'rape' somehow a sacred word that can never be used other than in a literal sense?

Human Nature, this kind of behaviour is as old as mankind, it only manifests differently over the generations. Young adolescent and teenage males will gang up on those they see as weaker, call the fat girl ugly and so on....Girls are not much better either to be fair.

It not acceptable or right, but it isn't new either.

Dont be silly now. No one really goes "mental" its the internet its all just one upmanship play the game nicely please.

Its not just a word if used with intent, whole 'nother argument/discussion.

I don't think the word gay has been used in the "happy" sense since the 1920's and rape, i pitty anyone that uses that freely in conversation cos it is soley used to cause maximum offence in a "polite" way so it seems?

yeah its a bit 'lame'

oops I guess that's offensive to disabled people

Also when you have two hard drives connected whereby one is a 'master' and the other is a 'slave'...... totally offensive to black people.....

you and me 1 on 1 no scope whatever the good sniper rifle is these days in what ever FPS is good these days.. BLops 2 ? :p

To be honest, the whole lad culture thing is idiotic. I can't think of one good thing it promotes. "Uhhh, I got rinsed last night, missed work today spent it vomiting instead. Massive lad points." It seems like it almost started off ironically, and then more and more people started being "serious" about it.

I played a lot of sport at uni, and the banter is fun. Yes, some of it is sexist (the football club had a joint wife-beater social with the netball club - who were, incidentally, fully happy to join in - for instance), but most of it is in good faith. However, the lad culture which seems to have developed out of that is atrocious.

Is this actually common?

Dunno. Comments indicate similar experiences. Wouldn't surprise me. I've been bullied and traumatised enough to know that speaking about the experience can often be an extremely difficult thing to do.

On the otherhand, I'm a complete lust ridden pervert. Personally I don't mind being enlightened by the militant feminists, as I lack empathy for the over attractive other half and frequently view them as nothing more than sex objects.

Lad culture is abhorrent though and belongs on scummy council estates, not in university. University should be about studying and researching, that's it.

It happened to me... my mate and I had a summer job in his dad's office in Birmingham when we were 16... obviously at the age where you usually go and try to get served in the local pub etc... though end up getting ID'd, kicked out and having to get a mate's older brother to buy you alcohol from an off license...
We decided on Friday to go out straight from work in our suits to a club... though still looking massively out of place and blatantly under aged we surprisingly got in without any hassle, got fairly drunk then got set upon by the chavviest group of female office workers imaginable... 'how old are you luv' 'I could be your mum' etc...

....then they started grabbing...... essentially my mate and I got sexually assaulted on the dancefloor of the 'Dome 2' nightclub by a group of randy dinnerladies...

Dinnerladies? :( They were after meat and two veg by the sounds of it :)

Circa 1995, a classmate wrote a poem which featured the line, 'whilst I sit and be gay', or similar. Talking about happily sitting by a creek or river, I can't remember which. The anthology of poems is 300 miles away, so I can't check.

Sounds like you went to a gay school:D

That's a bit strange as c1995 and even c1985 the word Gay would be associated with homosexuality far quicker and more commonly than with gaiety. (In fact the word 'Gay' has been associated with homosexuality for several centuries, although it is in the last century when the emphasis has changed and the homosexuality definition has taken precedence)
