To live - Gloucester area

I do like Cheltenham but there seems to be a lot of dives in the area? I spoke to a few local people there as I stay during the week and they all say the same thing; that is Cheltenham's nice and rough parts are street at a time whereas Gloucester is area by area.

Viewing this at some point, rent has just dropped to £875 and they don't mind pets which is a bonus as I have a dog.

Dursley is akin to the Forest of Dean folk!

The hills have eyes!!!

I'm from the Forest of Dean

Whatever you do, if you've got to travel to Gloucester during rush-hour daily, do not choose to live somewhere where you need to use the A40 to get in to Gloucester from the west. I can guarantee you will have to sit in a ridiculous traffic jam every morning unless it's the school holidays and it doubles the length of my commute which should be 40 minutes. It drives me absolutely mad.

As a good balance in terms of commuting I'd try and find somewhere in or near Newent/Ledbury.

I could never live in Gloucester, I'd rather sit in the traffic every day.

I've been doing it for four weeks now as I'm staying with a mate in Quedgeley. I leave at around 0710 every morning and I seem to miss the traffic, it's just on the way home when I join Castle Meads Way it all goes to pot.

Moved to Quedgeley a few months ago and one thing has been bugging me, are there any nice bars in Gloucester?

and yes if you have to down the A40 or use the A417 into Gloucester, good luck. I go out of Gloucester on the A417 and cant help but feel sorry for the people backed up through Maisemoore.

He lives in Kingsway, we just go to the Barn Owl. I haven't come across any decent pubs tbh. There are a few places near the large Tesco but nothing that I'd consider a decent pub.

It's in Kingsway on the other side to the A38, it's a large converted barn, they've done a good job but it's a typical food pub now with average food and average beers on tap. There isn't much of a pub atmosphere as a good 90% go in there to eat and not drink. It's around a 2 minute walk from my mates so we tend to pop in now and again for a few pints/play on the quiz machine.

don't come to cheltenham. the people (like me) are all ignorant. :p

gloucester is much friendlier and it should be cheaper as well. admittedly cheltenham is more aesthetically pleasing but that's about it.

A friend moved to the area a couple of years ago.

His conclusion was Gloucester bad Cheltenham good.

Ive since been to Cheltenham many times and like it a lot.

I live in Dursley and really like it. Great countryside all around and a small town with a surprising number of decent shops, plus one of the finest pubs I know.

Actually now you mention it, when I last visited Dursley I was impressed by the number of independent shops, and I was hoping to visit the Old Spot before I left Gloucestershire.

I've not lived in either, but I like both in different ways. Gloucester is a lot earthier, it does for instance have one of the oldest pubs in Britain. If such an establishment existed in Cheltenham it would have become a Restaurant, or a wine bar, or pub/heritage site with a [expletive denoting intercourse (verb)] gift shop selling overpriced fudge. But it's in Gloucester, and it's still a pub.
