I've not owned it a year, it's only been on the road 2 weeks and I've spent a hideous amount on it, especially for what it is.

Worth it though, when it runs it makes such an awesome noise and is good fun to drive. :)

E: Initially I didn't want to know how much I'd spent, then I put it into excel, I wish I hadn't to be honest. :(

cost of car - Bugger all depreciation, is a 20 year old MX5.
TAX - £205
Insurance - £500
Petrol - However many miles I do at ~30mpg.
Maintenance Costs - Since owning it (just under a year), Brakes all round and a set of tyres. Anything else I've spent has been unnecessary really - I've replaced the seats with a pair in better condition, along with a different set of wheels.

My fault, I kept asking you :D

I've spent £2.6k on servicing, repairs and the odd upgrade since I bought it in 2010. I bought it for £6.7k, and it's worth a damn sight less than that now, but that's irrelevant until I sell it. Other than that, tax is £270, insurance was £550 last year and I do about 12k miles a year at an average of 26.5MPG.

Edit: I forgot Fuelly tells me how much I spend on fuel. I spent £3,148 in 2012, covering 13,000 miles.

Pretty reasonable for what it is IMHO

For this thread to be remotely interesting people should list which car it is they own.

I own/drive a 1988 BMW E30 325i Cabriolet, but I am not going to go into the total cost of things.

I bought it for £400 as a non runner, I taxed it like a ***** for 6 months at £121 (or whatever the 6 month rate was in Feb) and it cost me £50 or so to change my insurance over to it for the remainder of my policy (~5months).

IF I worked it out right

I burned around £4400 of petrol in 18months
14,000 miles at around 17MPG

I guess
cost of car (or rough value lost per year) = payed £3500 for it about 18months ago
TAX is included in petrol price here
Insurance = £500 per year
Petrol = around £2900
Maintenance Costs = around £600
all cleaning stuff like sponges, wax polish, car shampoo, polishing cloths, Auto car wash, etc = most likely around £100
Plus extras (Grom mp3/Bluetooth for car stereo & SS exhaust ) = around £350

Well my Z4 has set me back the following recently:

New starter motor £130
New window regulator £150
Fresh rubber all round £600
Service £130
Complete front suspension rebuild £580
Road tax £240

So yeh, I'm a bit skint :(

It's the depreciation that's the killer. I won't be working it out on the Golf as it will just depress me.

Luckily the car in my sig costs very little in essentials (cheap tax, insurance, very little depreciation and I do my own servicing now) although I do like spending money on improving it but it's more of a hobby than a necessity.

2010 Honda Insight ES owned a year and a half. Do about 9k miles per year. I do keep track of costs.

I estimate the following over the past year:

cost of car (or rough value lost per year) - £1400
TAX - £10
Insurance £345
Petrol - £1100 ish (average 46mpg)
Maintenance Costs £300 (including main dealer service with free full AA cover, brake fluid change and MOT)
Cleaning etc £60
Total - £3215

This year will probably be a bit pricier. I'm expecting 4 new tyres before winter.

My VXR cost me about £6500-7k a year to run (had it for about 10 months).

That included:
Insurance (£1600)
Tax (about £300
Tyres (£500 x2)
Service (£200)
MOT (£35)
Petrol 16k+ miles (£3500+)

I bought the car for £6700 and sold it for £6300.

If i included everything in the original post i bet it would be about £8k+.

I get tax back though on my fuel allowance, though it makes hardly any difference at all.
