Am about to join up with playstation plus mainly to get the games you can download for free..

Do you also get free games if you pay for an xbox live gold account ??

You get access to multiplayer and that's about it.

You don't exactly choose to buy gold because its good value for money, you buy it because you have to.

Xbox live party chat is excellent though. Much better than Playstations chat system. As already said you can get it much cheaper if buy a code online. Look at cheapxboxlivecodes.com

There was a time when you could quite reasonably say Xbox Live was the only online infrastructure for consoles that got it right. A lot can change in 5 or 6 years though, and if they carry it over to the next gen in its current state, I think that would be a massive mistake.

I don't ever see them allowing free access to games like Playstation Plus does though, that would require a complete philosophical turnaround from Microsoft as a company.

On a semi related note has anyone ever heard of this; my gold subscription has auto renewed two years running without charging me? (its a old card associated with my account).

I don't use my xbox for any multiplayer playing...

I only play the SP part of games..

I tried multiplayer a few times with different games & systems and never really liked it.
But use to love playing multiplayer games with my local real friends..

If uou have any intention of using netflix or similar on 360, you need a gold sub. If you arent interested in gaming though, just don't bother. Keep it silver. Psn+ is much better value for you. And you can access all the online services free, as it should be. But they're apparently giving some great games away.

Don't bother then.

MS doesn't need to make gold good value for money because people buy it because they have to. I rarely play any game that doesn't have a multiplayer aspect. Its that "competition" if you like that keeps me coming back to play battlefield or call of duty Multiplayer for 100s of hours. As a result i have to buy gold whether i like it or not.

That's exactly my thoughts on it. I wouldn't pay for Xbox live gold in it's current state if I didn't have to.

I hate to have to point this out, but if you are PAYING for playstation plus, then the games are not FREE as you put it.

what else are you actually getting with PS+? you pay for it to get the games. Now im not saying its a bad deal, looks to me like there are some ok titles.

But really an xbox live sub is not the same thing as a PS+ sub, one is a subscription to microsofts online play service and the other is a 'game of the month' club.

As for XBL being worth it, and continuing to be worth it.. at full price no, but it can usually be purchased for £20-25 online and for reliable non-laggy online gaming its pretty good, the PS3 relies on the person hosting the game to have a good net connection and even if you are personally forking over £30/month to a decent ISP for a top service your game can be crippled because the person hosting has something that could barely be considered broadband

on the flip side you can own an Xbox on a fairly average ISP and paying £25/year gives you a good gaming experience without having to buy a more expensive broadband package, some of that value is lost if you pay for both a good package and XBL as I do but I dont consider it a huge expense

I think going forward microsoft would do well to open up multiplayer between XBL silver members as P2P but then still have a hosted service for gold members. Giving the best of both options, making gold slightly cheaper like £15-20 as standard and introducing a XBL platinum that also includes a game of the month

No, they are not free. But multiple games given away every month, Some of which are £20+ still makes the service a steal, and there are other aspects of PSN+ that are quite handy (Although I personally feel they should be part of PSN to begin with)

Indeed, but gaming online should be free as it is on PC and as it is on PS3, nothing Xbox live offers is worth any yearly price tag, even gaming is generally hosted P2P

I'm not completely sure what you're saying here, Both consoles if running a P2P gaming session will require a good internet connection for the host. And it is infact the PS3 that has a backbone of dedicated servers at is center for hosting purposes, and that cuts down a lot of problem with lag in general.

Sounds good.

Server or P2P is nothing to do with microsoft unless the game is a first party game. It's down to the publisher.

Exactly

Call of Duty doesn't have dedicated servers and requires one of the players be host, so P2P. Battlefield has dedicated servers which are provided by DICE / EA. If we wanted dedicated servers for COD, it would need to come from Activision.

Not sure where you n3vrmind has got this idea that Gold members have dedicated servers for every game from ?

+1, so many people keep saying free, even some PS staff (though others will opt for 'at no extra cost' which people seem to interpret as free).

I'm sub'd to PS+ for the games (the other stuff it comes with hardly deserve a mention) as it's a great deal (especially since they changed it to instant game collection) but it's certainly not free.

I also have only ever got it at the discounted prices of £29.99 or £31.99. It's worth the full £39.99 but why pay more if you can avoid it?

Personally never did understand XBL, I'm not going to pay a third party just to use what I'm already paying my ISP for, I used the month trial that came with the console and that was it.

Microsoft will need to update the service next time around if they want to be competitive.
