well installed windows8 and found out my wifi card is unsupported by the os. it works mostly, however i get issues on bootup and coming out of hibernation. i would like to replace the card, but not sure what i would need?

Studio 1557
Intel i7-720QM
8GB Crucial DDR3 PC3-10600 ( 2 x 4GB)
Sandisk 120GB Ultra SATA 3Gb SSD
320GB Weston Digital (modded in DVD slot)
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n)
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366 x 768) WLED
Windows 8

You'll have to find out what options were available when the laptop was sold. Theres a whitelist in the bios so you cant stick any old one in.

Im pretty sure the Intel 5100 works though.

is the 5100 not in the same boat? i cant understand why its not being supported in win8. its not even that old, and far more older wifi cards do work.. poor show IMO

First of all thanks for sharing this nice and useful post above this problem because I have seen that many people are suffered from this problem and they can't get solution. Hope I also will try this tip.

Can you not just upgrade to any model that fits in the board?
I bought an Intel 6200 (think it is that model anyway) and used it over a few laptops, including an ancient mini9, works perfectly in Win 8.

What slot does it use? I could send you an Atheros wireless n card from a Samung NP355V5C to test if that would help? Samsung ship it on Win 8 laptops.
As far as I was aware, those slots can take any expansion card that fits. Didnt think it really mattered on brand.

very kind offer, im not so much worried on speed, its just the dropping in and out. mine is the the 5300 pictured above. not sure what you mean buy what slot? its the only slot i have on the laptop.

I always thought the 2nd and 3rd were backup antennas and to achieve better range, should even work with only one connected?
You could try the current card with the 3rd antenna unplugged?

Card i have will fit your laptop (hadnt noticed pictures in previous post!) Will easy send it to you if you need a card to test?

thats a really kind offer mate, but i have a few pennies in my paypal and can see some of those 6200 for less than £10, i will take a gamble and report back my findings.

cheers fella

got the 6200 installed, and although the drop outs have stopped, it takes about 30seconds before a web page works after reboot or coming out of hibernation.

fresh install of windows8 and all drivers installed.
