Just Cause dev claims “PS4 will out-power most PCs for years

Again with the 'many'...

I'll go do the maths for you. What is a current comparable card from ATI and nVidia that matches the PS4's performance? 7870 and 680? Or are we being generous and its 7850 and 670?

Many != most. No need to do the maths. I'm quite capable of counting to above 100.

I've even pointed this out in my previous reply but..yeah..if you enjoy focussing on one word to try and prove your point please carry on.

And of course every developer working on the PS4 and the new Xbox will have years of experience to get every last little bit of power out of them and utilise them to their fullest potential. They will have that skillset and experience straight out ...

And I am sure every developer can get back all the money they will need to invest in a title that uses all that power so as not to make a loss ...

And even if PC were the poor kid on the block I am sure every developer will say you know what just for a change I'll won't pitch this game to the lowest common denominator for a multiplatform release ...

many
Adjective
A large number of: "many people agreed with her"; "the solution to many of our problems".
Noun
The majority of people: "TV for the many".

From the Steam survery:

GTX680 - 0.94%
HD 7970 - 0.52%
HD 7870 - 0.55%
Total - 2.01%

I don't care how you try and cut it, 2% does not mean 'many' in any way, shape or form. It barely constitutes 'a few'.

The GPU in the new consoles aren't as fast as a 7970 or gtx 680.

Punctuation. *head pain*

"Ports" will no doubt be lazy and will run badly of course.

so we agree, unfortunately most games will continue to be ports, sure there's an odd exception like the witcher 3 which will probably look a lot nicer on high end pc hardware than the eventual console port.

Steam users != OcUK forum members.

Not to mention that 2% of however many people filled in the Steam survey is a number that I'm sure could very easily be read as "many".

The density levels on this forum astound me at times.

His point is that those cards fall into the category of higher spec than the PS4 GPU.

We agree that ports will be bad and I'll concede that if you're in the habit of playing bad ports then yeah, you'll probably need a higher spec PC than you 'should' do. I tend to steer clear of such games though :)

The 680 and the 7970 are in there to make a total of people who have 'a higher specced rig' than the PS4.

There's plenty of other cards comparable or better than the new console GPU's, even some of the older series cards are faster. Also steam hardware survey is a bad thing to go off as not everyone who has steam has ran the survey.

Will most of the new console games be locked at 30fps with stupid amounts of motion blur or post processing to make it appear smooth?

i didn't say the ps4 is twice as powerful as equivalent pc specs i just said it would take more power from a pc to get close to the ps4 in real world performance, once all the optimizations, less os overheads etc come into play. and needing a titan in todays available hardware to compete IF the ps4 was allready out and games were fully taking advantage of it, probably isnt far off the mark, but likely in 2 years time that kind of performance will be more accessible.

Like me, i cba to fill in surveys, i want to game.

I never said it was. Please go back and re-read my posts. Maybe try improving your reading comprehension first though.

You said that "many of us have higher specced PCs".

When you look at all PCs, that number is tiny, a fraction of a percent, not 'many' at all.

When you look at gamers PCs its 2%, which again isn't 'many'.

And when you look at just OcUK Forum members active in the PC Games sub forum, an area designed for the minority of people who exist at the top end of the PC gaming hardware market, the sample set is unrepresentative and therefore cannot be used for reliable analysis.

My reading comprehension is fine.

I have seen the spec mentioned on these forums - how does it compare to my PC system - i7 950 at 3.8hz and a 580 gtx.

I game at 1080p which is the resolution that PS4 games will be too.

I can expect equal quality in terms of graphics and gameplay or is comparing the above spec a the PS 4 a complete waste of time?

Well this turned silly and petty as expected.

He's probably right (even amongst gamers the average spec is well off what people on here usually think it is)

This is my point which I have clearly failed to get across well :p

There is nothing wrong with the statement from the Devs. The problem is the skewed views of the small subset of people who read it due to what they buy (top end cards) and where they hang out (here).

You wouldn't expect to get a balanced view of a "best car of the year" from the opinions of a Ferrari owners only Forum, for example.

Of course OcUK PC Games forum members think the statement is silly, but that doesn't mean the statement is actually silly.

I was under the impression Steam automatically examined people's hardware for the survey?
