This isn't really for the people who can just pick up a book and go. And this isn't for school revision its for microsoft exams. I've recently started my 70-640 book and got to chapter 7 and suddenly stopped. I really dont learn well reading, got to be doing practical stuff which is why i have vm's setup.

But i just find it really hard to force myself to pick the book up and start reading. i know that when i do, i actually sometimes get into it. but there always seems to be something else i could be doing. gaming, cleaning etc.

I know its mainly down to self discipline, but anyone else struggle to just pick that book up? if so how do you kick yourself up the bum to read it?

my motivation should really be more exams pass the faster my wage goes up.. :/

The dole que.

I make it more interesting by underlining key phrases and adding written notes. Your post has just given me the kick to go back to it as I stopped 3 weeks back as work was taking over but it's gone back to normal now. :) If I can't focus on my book I read something else, current book on the go is A Short Introduction to Particle Physics.

Go to the library.

Preferably a local university one as they will have more convenient opening and closing times and also an extensive range of useful books. I know my uni allowed external members of the public to use the library and I presume most do.

I look in to the eyes of middle aged supermarket workers and see the look of utter misery :)

I can't. I'm also very hands-on, it's the only way I can actually take anything in. Was very interested in computer sciences but when it came to studying a subject, I had no chance. I like reading books, but when it's an educational book I struggle like a whale trying to swim on land. I pass all my practical stuff with ease, but theory is another matter unless I've learnt enough through the prac work to get by.

Well done for getting as far as you have. I know many things are theory only but maybe you could apply something from what you're reading to one of your VM's to help you get through it and retain the information?

I just used to think of the massive loan I had out to pay for my education and then with the thought of failing, this combination always got me to set my arse on the chair and open the books! :D

My friend has great success making mind maps. Personally I struggle with revision, I've always under performed in exams, although never done awfully.

Uninstalling any pretty addictive games (e.g. mmorpg) and not listening to music works well for me. And yeah as someone said before - go to the college/uni library as there you have little else to do other than study.
