New Pope

The election of the new Archbishop of Canterbury didn't get this much media attention :(

80m Anglicans vs 1bn Catholics would suggest the Pope is more important. Also the papal election has more theatre around it making it more newsworthy.

The record is 13 days. Back in 1978 when I was 12 I thought, who is is this guy (John Paul 1st) he didn't last long just over a month, I thought that was the shortest

Bit of a conspiracy surrounding John Paul I. As a post mortem on a pope is forbidden under Vatican law we may never know.

As for the new Pope Francis, I wish him well but will he be the one to pull the Church into the 21st century ? Given his conservatism there will be doubts.

Yeah but the ABofC is our prelate.

He might be your prelate, he certainly isn't mine!

Welby got a fair amount of coverage but considering how globally important the pope is there is no suprise he gets more. There are also about 5m Catholics in the UK so it s of importance to a fair number of the UK citizens as well as being World news.

I don't care for the catholic church, they are all pedophiles!

They're not all paedophiles - there are just a disproportionate number of paedophiles that chose to become priests... The Church (notably the last pope) did however deliberately set out to cover up paedophilia and actually hide/protect known paedophiles...

They've also likely got a disproportionate number of gay people serving as priests...

Chuck in the impact of their policy on contraception and the effect on AIDS related deaths in Africa its actually quite a destructive organisation. People get upset at George W Bush over Iraq - he's got nothing on the past few Popes and the negative impact they've had on the world.

What drivel.

Ratzinger warned John Paul II not to hide it, he came in at the worst possible time.

The reason for high numbers of paedophiles is due to the attraction of power, especially with the historical influence it exerted over people.

There were a great many nasty things done in the church, and some people have a LOT to answer for, but to try and smear the entire church is wrong.

Well, they chose a white, male, misogynist, bigot for Pope but, hey, at least he's the first Pope not from Europe! That's almost progress.

What's your opinion, then, on the huge amount of wealth they horde whilst committed African Catholics die of AIDs?

Crimen Sollicitationis is the title of the 1962 document outlining the church's policy on these cases... Ratzinger was charged with enforcing it for 20 years... The church's policy meant that accusers were expected to maintain an oath of secrecy too... The policy allowed coverups to keep occurring, paedophilia to run rampant within the organisation and be left unchecked - the last pope played a big part in all of this before he even became pope. There is a reason why G.W. Bush granted him immunity from prosecution....
