'SimCity' & the rights of gamers as consumers

In the end if you don't want to play a game that requires an online connection...then don't buy a game that requires an online connection.

But... no. I brought the game because I wanted to play it, reguardless of the online issues it has. And either way I have the right to assume that a product I pay good money for is going to work from day 1.
Ofcourse, your right, people should vote with there wallets. But that's never really going to happen. Complaining about the product directly to the manafacturer can work just as well. Look at the ME3 fiasco.

The problem is, is that every person who continues to buy their products is reinforcing their opinion that they are correct in their current direction. EA are doing this to every single one of their IP's and wont change until enough people stop buying into it. Get used to it or stop telling them they are right, that is the only choice you have.

You're right, it was equally as pathetic an attempt at marketing a perfectly acceptable model for a single player game as one with online mulitplyer DRM requirements that more often then not will end up ruining a players experience. There are no potential benefits to having SimCity or Diablo consistently online as far as I can tell.

Was it a pathetic attempt? I agree that both games fit perfectly into the single player bracket but hang on.... Diablo3, SimCity, they have both sold millions of copies right?

At the end of the day, everyone in here has bought the game, they have sold mass unit so don't expect them to care to much if you like the game or not, they already have your money and many of you had beta access to decide if the game wasn't for you.

I have the game, I wasn't impressed with the servers on the opening weekend and expected better, they knew how many units were sold so they should have been better prepared for the server hit (I say this about most online games tho).
In terms of the game, I think the cities are to small, maybe they should have called this "SimTown" and I would like a offline, single player option BUT having said that, have I stopped playing the game? No, not yet, I find the game very enjoyable just as im sure most of the angry crew do - you all like this game and you want to see improvements to suit what you expected from playing the previous titles but in fairness whats the point in moaning about EA? can you see them fixing the problem? I cant, not anytime in the near future anyway so might as well just get on with it, either play the game, or dont.

Maybe start an online protest to get the improvements we want? I will gladly sign it but they are yet to say "we will make the changes you want" so maybe just stop playing the game if its not to your liking?

Err, I didn't I played the beta and the beta told me enough to know not to buy it. It was far from the game I expected or the series deserved. Maybe because I didn't buy then some would say I should not be allowed a voice or be posting about the game. But the fact is I do have a voice and the reason I am posting is because if they had just iterated on what they had done before I would have purchased the game.

Read the rest of my post, I went on to say that lots of you would have had Beta access to decide if the game was for you or not. You played the Beta, wasn't impressed and didnt buy it! well done its just a shame everyone else didn't do the same.

I'm not waving the EA flag or saying how the game is made correct but whats the point in us all getting this mad about it? its out now, its sold mass unit so as far as EA are concerned its party time

What happens if your electricity provider has a problem where the electricity is down for a few days, and you want to play the game you paid for?

The publishers are perfectly entitled to put it in, if the game sells poorly because people don't want it then they'd review the situation. If the game still sells well then clearly the customer base doesn't mind and it's just a loud minority whining on the internet with hypthetical situations that will rarely ever happen.

Additionally, why people expect an 'online' game to work 100% straight out the bat on launch day is beyond me.

CD Projekt are a perfect example, they released Withcer 2 DRM free and it sold amazingly well, the player base responded appropriately, lots of piracy sites asked and begged there users to purchase a copy if they liked it to support them and even removed torresnts/nzb's to force people to buy the game.

The boxed version had SecuROM and it caused issues with the game, to the point where it reduced FPS by about 40% and dramatically increased loading times until CD Projekt got a patch out which took them about two weeks.

I was the oposite, the beta actually made me want to play more. Its only after a day or two of playing that I'm left massively disapointed. Maybe thats why they limited the beta to an hour...

I think what I really need to do is stop buying games at launch, forget the hype and give it a few days to find out if its likely to be a worthwhile purchase.

How is that in any way related... sorry but my toaster would also stop functioning, as would my ps3 and my single player pc games - mandatory online for basically a single player game is DRM just for DRM's sake.

Electricity is of course a requirement for PC gaming, in the same way fuel is a requirement to drive a car. Online DRM for single player games - clearly not an actual requirement for a single player game to work, much like Insurance is not a requirement for a car to drive - it is merely something mandated by the government.

Does requiring it have an online connection benefit users who pay for the game... not really, meanwhile in other news - users who own a parrot, have a wooden leg, wear an eye patch and generally shout Yaaarrrgh! are happily playing a DRM free version anyway - it IS out there now.

Nobody expects anything to work straight out of the bat on launch day - the difference is that Simcity should be a single player game - the online aspect in comparison is nowhere near as complicated as say World of Warcraft when it launched, or Half Life 2, where Valve basically launched the entire Steam content delivery service at the same time.

EDIT:

Not that it really matters as someone has almost created an offline mod for it anyway.

All the BS from EA regarding calculations being done "in the cloud" is exactly that.
