leaving the pedestrian with severe physical injuries and brain damage.

The punishment - 12 month ban and a £400 fine. Anyone else think this is outrageous? She didn't even plead guilty!

It's time we took a serious look at punishment for motoring offences. Instead of generating revenue fining people for doing 35 in a 30 with no consequence, we should throw the book at people who cause accidents, especially through reckless actions like being on the phone.

Driving is a privilege and not a right. People who cause accidents like this should be banned for life.

Taking that article at face value not sure how she got away without a custodial sentence, justice definitely wasn't served.

Taking that article at face value ...

Well, there are always two sides to every story. It is quite plausible that she may have still lost control whether using or phone or not, e.g. ice, car failure.

I guess they couldn't prove she was using her phone though, which is why she received this outcome.

I suspect there are missing facts here.

Possibly, though I'm struggling to think of possible mitigating circumstances. This article has a little more detail, and says she mounted the pavement before hitting the jogger, so it's not like he ran into the road.

But what if you live in the back of beyond without the financial capabilities to move elsewhere? The world we live in sometimes demands we have a car.

Its frosty in those pictures, I'm sure "reading a text message" isnt the sole reason why she lost control, but a contributing factor.

I had a mate who was knocked off his bike and killed by a woman driving whilst she was using her phone. The punishment was also pathetic, nearly everday I see people driving while using their phones, cutting off junctions and weaving all over. Makes my blood boil!

What irks me the most about all of this is that these people have ALLOWED themselves to become distracted. Back when it was considered legal, I was on the road all day and would be on the phone quite often. People would frequently think they had been disconnected, because if I suddenly needed to focus, whether to park, or negotiate an slip road, I would just stop talking, sometimes mid sentence. This was because I gave attention to the road priority over the phone call. This wasn't even a concious thing - my brain simply lacked the capacity to do both and because I didn't give up road focus, I lost the ability to carry the conversation until the maneuver was complete.

Why am I saying this? Because I know its possible to be on the phone and drive without being a danger (I'm not saying you should) - so not only did these women break the law by using the phones, they chose to allow it to distract them from the job of driving. I don't actually see a difference between that and deliberately running someone down.
