Comic Relief

Trouble is it appears that the majority of the money goes to corrupt governments and goes towards buying guns. If they were serious about Africa, much more would have been achieved.

And you could also be very cynical and say the only reason the celebs do it is for exposure and to promote the perception that they care about charity.

lumbered them with enormous debts

Why are people always 'lumbered' with debts, like they had no choice or say in the matter? Why is it that people never choose debt, but are afflicted with it? Thinking needs to change in this area. Let's feel sorry for everyone that was greedy enough to borrow more than they could afford to pay back.

who lumbered them with the debt ? i've never lent an african money in my life and suspect most other people are the same? if you're talking about government, well i think they're doing there bit in donating millions every year.

Didn't realise this was on until I saw it on bbc news this morning.. I can't believe they break the record every year.. Propaganda? :-P

Comic Relief has raised 800 million in 25 years, not including this event.

Thats pretty good going!

And yet Bill Gates has given more in 5 minutes with a swipe of a pen when he set up his foundation which has raised billions from the world's richest people.

And that's what erks me about Comic Relief, statistically speaking the celebrities that take part will be the in richest 1% people on Earth, and they guilt-trip everyone in Britain, including Britain's poor into giving their money whilst the celebs just give their 'time'.

Didn't watch it. Don't want to spend my evening being guilt tripped every five minutes.

I buy a red nose for me and my two boys, that's enough for me.

I am not entirely sure helping yet another generation survive to create a new generation born into squalor and poverty is doing them a kindness.

Seems a bit like resuscitating someone just to torture them some more.

Not always. Ethiopia's population since band aid has more than doubled:

https://www.google.co.uk/publicdata...country:ETH&dl=en&hl=en&q=ethiopia population

This is in part driven by an increase in life expectancy but the fertility rate is still 4 children per female (down from 7!) so the population will grow further before stabilisation. This has been on the back of a firm economic policy which actually restricts foreign investment (or pillaging?) and an actual drive from the government for development. The following is an interesting read:

And how do you know celebs don't donate as well as their time?

Charities are not all the seam, very little of the money get to the right places.

Africa is one big begging pot, so no, I don't believe in charity, certainly not for them.

What rubbish - RND has specifically said every penny donated goes to helping others. Nothing taken out for administration costs at all. Other charities maybe.

Whats RND? (Sorry is painfuly obvious)

Anyway, heard Jessie J had a shaving, was this live on air, or done offscreen.
Could have raised more going full bodyhair, eyebrows, and the rest, more amusing, more comical to see a vagazilling live on air (post watershed of course, got to stay decent) get jenny love hewiit on the blower for the next event.
