So yes, you do like being taken for a ride.
Feel free to provide some evidence for your assertion that the fluids are the same. The fact they are not recommended by the manufacturer of the transmission is a good starting to point to say 'they are not'. You can make 'it's a scam' claims all you like.
Interesting. Do you own a ZF box?
I have a 535d, so yes. It's either a ZF 6HP26 or a ZF 6HP26 TU (sure the latter). It's under warranty, I haven't changed the transmission oil.

Yeah because ZF are going to give you a list of fluids that will work so that there is no need to buy their Lifeguard stuff they sell
Stick your rolleyes up your backside. As soon as you came in with 'You like being taken for a ride don't you?' I knew it was going to be an argument rather than a discussion.

ZF publish lists of fluids compatible with their transmissions, including where they have their own ZF-branded product in the range.

It 'going' is not the problem, it starting to behave differently and be altogether a less pleasant transmission for tens of thousands of miles before hand is the problem!

So if mine is sweet at the moment and not causing any problems I don't really have anything to worry about?

Well, it's hard to say. What year is your car? Is it tuned? Do you drive hard, and what kind of cycle (i.e. short journeys in town, long journeys on motorway)? How many miles do you drive per year?

Fluid replacements are preventative maintenance. If you leave it until the transmission is behaving erratically, then something isn't happy. Ideally you want to change before that, not just for the sake of the transmission, but so you have a nicer driving experience.

For example, I bought mine on about 70k and it was flawless, after I got used to the early locking up of the torque converter and it adapted to my driving style. 35% of the mileage again, two years, enhanced engine performance and my driving (e.g. I was driving along at 4250 RPM in 6th yesterday) later, it could probably do with a change.

So I got a quote from an Indy up here whos supposed to be pretty good, but hes quoted £600 for a gearbox service........

I'm sure someone said the filter kit for the gearbox was £200? then theres about 12 litres of transmission fluid? I dunno but in reality I wont be getting that done there, that's the kind of figure I was expecting a main dealer to quote

So I found another local indi, they have quoted £140 to just change the gearbox oil and £430 if it needs the new sump/filter which whilst considerably cheaper is still quite a bit considering I found the sump/filter and gasket for £89 on ebay

Ha for £600 I'd just put on a new torque converter which will come with fresh fluid anyway.

Or a new valve body, again new fluid and even that costs around £400 all in.
