That collection of old wifi routers... an ancient Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad... some budget Sennheiser headphones...

I'm sure many of us have faced the problem of a growing pile of old, low-value electronics that sit boxed up in a cupboard somewhere.

What I don't want to do is send it all to landfill.

What's a good way to dispose of this stuff? I can't imagine people buying it.

[mods: apologies for posting this in the MM - I blame my browser, tho it was probably 100% my fault for not paying attention :p]

Most recycling centres have a bin for electronic items which get recycled.

I'm pretty sure we don't have a recycling centre anywhere near us... we have a dump, and I'd imagine that anything taken to them goes to landfill.

Ours is a dump, they just class it as a recycling centre. But you have areas to put things in, i.e, wood, metal and light bulbs.

These then go through the correct channels.

Look on your council's web site under recycling, they will have a list of centres that take plastics or electronics.
Or talk to the people who work there, they often have a little metal storage bin for TVs

If it works, take it to a charity shop...

Except nobody is going to want an old router or most of the other ancient crap I've got boxed up, whether it works or not :p

I think it'd be better to break it all up and recycle the metals and plastics inside.

As above. Ours has an electronics area, they take everything from fridges to a mouse. It all goes to the correct place, and they strip the whole thing down themselves.

Dumps are the thing of the past. Most if not all councils have household waste recycling centres. Ones from my council are certainly not dumps, they are modern, clean yards with staff on hand.

Also check for details about your bin collection. Our Stafford collection allows us to place small electricals e.g. toaster, microwave, speakers in a carrier bag next to the regular bin. As long as the device fits in a regular shopping bag, it will be collected.

i live out in sticks, and even our council dump has recycling for electrical items

like said above you have to split it all down
