I have leave from work booked at the end of May for two weeks and I wanna go away with my girlfriend for a week. We have no preference of place to go just yet, so I'm thinking..

Is it a good idea to just wait til a few days before I'd like to leave and find a last ,minute bargain?

I've never done it, but I think you will save money by going last minute. Especially if you don't have a specific destination in mind as you say.

It will probably be quite an exciting way of doing things, but I'm much more boring and like to do lots of planning and research so end up staying in the nicest place possible for my money - so I book it as early as possible.

Once you decide on where you want to go, just get on and book it. Time scale doesn't really matter a great deal as long as there is enough time to organise all the relevant transport details to and from the final destination..

Last night I booked a long weekend in Malta for Easter.

Last year I booked a Long weekend away (Jubilee) to Iceland, this one I finalised the booking on the Thursday and flew out on the Friday morning.

Either way you have plenty of time to research the different flight times, choice of location, and your expected itinerary for the week. Mull it over, email hotels and excursion companies, see what they can do for you. Pick the one that offers you the best options.

Skyscanner is my favourite webpage for sorting flights.

It does boil down to choice v bargain. The later you leave it the cheaper you can get a booking (though not always with flights) but you'll have less choice of what's on offer. All depends where you want to go, it probably helps to narrow it down a bit at least.

Do it. There is a certain rush not knowing where it is your going to be in a couple of days time, that's having done the whole travelling thing! :D

Well my girlfriend couldn't resist and booked up our lazy holiday in Cape Verde. Not much to do but chill out and hammer the all inclusive. Looking forward to it. Nice week away end of may :-)
