Hi, I'm looking to buy a new PC, fairly high end. I know roughly what I want, but lack the knowledge of the current PC market to know the good from the bad, the brands to avoid etc...

My priority is stability. I'm not looking to overclock and I want reliable parts and stuff that works nicely together.

Currently thinking of the following:

  • Intel 3770K Processor
  • GeForce GTX 660 (preferably 3 year warranty for the implied reliability).
  • 16GB DDR
  • 240GB SSD - Intel 520 maybe?
  • 2TB HDD,
  • Motherboard, must be stable and have optical out (they seem to have that these days anyway).
  • Decent PSU
  • Case, DVD drive etc.

Max budget around £1400, but I suspect you guys might be able to bring something in a fair bit under that? Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers all.

the i7 for many is over kill for gaming, but i use it and as long as the game support it, which most do now days it's no worse than a i5 but for some games it's loads better.
the samsung pro is a fast sdd, the plextor while cheaper isn't far behind so either would be a good choice, i use adata pro's myself as speed v cost is great, but some don't like the controller, while i don't mind it as it works well for me.
gone for amd cards either the 7950 or 70, the 50 can be overclocked to the 70 speed but as your not overclocking i'd go for the 70 for now and not nvidia as the prices are too high v's speed gained.

ram for both builds are good quick stuff, again as your not going to overclock i have taken out the samsung green ones, as there the best overclocking ram but not needed by you, so have replaced.

still kept in a liquid cooler, as well i went oem, less warranty but there hardly ever fail so spent it on better less noise solution.
psu went for a good make and enough power if you go sli / crossfire at a later date.

cases are personnel choices, to me there just a box to hold my bits in

one build is ivy which can't be upgraded to newer cpu's when out, the other is the 2011 socket which while costs more now can be upgraded to a later cpu when released.

so it's a choice and what out of your budget you wish to spend, you didn't spec a o/s or speakers / keyboard and mouse etc, gaming mat etc

and i also wouldn't go for spending this amount of money on a i5 either, so good luck and happy gaming

What's the main use of the rig?

You can shave £100 of most of the builds already specced as you don't want to overclock so won't need an aftermarket cooler.

Wow, thanks for all the replies and baskets. A lot of components I'd never really considered.

To answer some of the questions. The PC is mainly for gaming, programming, photoshop and general use. I want it fairly beefy, but I also want it to last. I won't be overclocking it so no need for a fancy cooler or SLI stuff.

I've always been an nVidia guy, so I'll probably stick with a GeForce card of some description. Seeing some of the baskets, perhaps I can go for a 670 rather than a 660.

You've given me much to think about. Thanks.

The socket 2011 CPUs doesn't come with a stock heatsink so it makes sense to buy a decent air cooler, just incase the temptation to OC hits ;)

The 660 is pretty meh. The 660Ti is a cutdown 670 and not really related to the 660. The 670 is a cutdown 680 and with some slight overclocking you can close the gap. AMDs 7950 is arguably the best bang for buck at it's price and the fact it comes with some nice games bundled with.

From what you have said I could suggest....

Really liking this, especially as it has the 670 and comes in well under budget. Though I'd probably double the size of the SSD, and maybe opt for a slightly more powerful PSU (how DO you work out how many watts you need for any given system!?!?!)

Cheers for the reply.

That GPU is on a special offer be quick ;) 500W is ample for a single GPU setup. The Z77-D3H is only really for a single GPU so no need for a higher rated PSU. I own the L8 630W PSU, the fan is dead quiet and although it's semi modular it's only the 24pin and 4/8pin cables that are hardwired to the PSU.

The 256GB Plextor Pro (with a firmware update) is a good alternative to the samsung 840 Pro. I'd use the difference in price to get a nice good value heatsink so atleast mild overclocking is possible and fan noise will be reduced.

That is a really nice build Hono, especially that RAM.

The only change I would make would be this. Since he is already spending out the cash for a nice gaming rig, no point skimping out on the potential for SLI.

Thanks Snips. However......

I like the black PCB on the Z77X-D3H but it's basically the SLI/Xfire support that makes it a more expensive mobo. If you use that mobo then it would make sense to have atleast a 750W PSU too so you could dual card the 670.

As he doesn't care about dual GPUs or overclocking I've just used the Z77-D3H and a decent quiet 530W semi-modular PSU

Fair doo's....seem's a bit of a shame, but hey!

Yeah, the time I feel that I need SLI will probably be the next time I buy a new PC :) Essentially my PC's last 3-5 years and I just buy a new one each time. I don't upgrade individual components unless something dies... hence 3 year warranties are better than 2 for this rig. Stability/reliability over performance I'd say.

I really liked my buddy Idlemans (Xfire/SLI capable) spec if I'm honest. After seeing the OPs comments I made some adjustments :)

Makes perfect sense mate, I'm just as picky :D

Hope the build goes well, will last you a long time! If you can, get a build log going too. :)

Fancy mini-itx for something a little different?
