Hi all.

My pc has begun to have a slight problem.

It's begun to randomly shut down and re start during Skyrim.

It's been fine since I built it.

I ran Prime 95 to test the CPU and all was well. I then ran the Kombustor tool for my Gpu, and low and behold, the pc shuts down and re starts after a few minutes of this. There is no blue screen, and the Gpu isn't overclocked. It is a GTX460

Is this a power or a heat issue? Or both?

I've got a spare fan so m going to install that pointing towards the Gpu and run another test.

Right, I did a test with Kombustor again, and it re started after about 5 minutes. This was with added cooling.

It reached around 62 degrees when the shutdown occurred. The fan control was set to auto, and the rpm did increase as the GPRS got hotter.

To be fair, the psu is 700w (I think, I'll double check).

Right, I was wrong, the PSU is an EZCool 650W.

Sounds a bit cheap?!

Yes it is naff lol I would reset to stock settings on the CPU and GPU. Be a shame if the PSU popped and took stuff with it (I dont wish it on you just saying).

What spec is the rig? I still run a 1GB 460GTX, overclocked it still does well for gaming. DX11 titles do test it but anything DX9 (ie skyrim) it deals with fine. 500W is enough for a single GPU setup. Modular would be nice too ;)

Some of the "usual suspects" there to look at

Some great advice thank you.

However I'm running my pc with the case side off, and it's running fine. I also flipped the psu round 180 as I think I might have installed it the wrong way?

It's currently running with the psu fan face up (the psu is mounted in the case floor)

That points towards an airflow issue, what case do you have?

Also PSU is best mounted with the fan facing down ;) Won't be much difference between the two though

I don't care if the PSU is 1000W it's still naff lol Get a better PSU and you can get more performance safely. My 460 is @900Mhz and MAX temp is 80 under load with acceptable noise from the fan.

I don't think it's GPU temps. It's possibly the PSU, if you had it fan down and the case doesnt have vents.....that's an issue. If you have the case on thick carpet with the PSU fan down that is also an issue.

Having the side panel off is just letting in a tonne of dust. Having the PSU fan up is ok, I do this on cases with side windows to "show it off". It's taking warm air from inside the case and expelling it out, so will probably help the GPU a little bit for temps. If you have it fan down it draws cool air in from outside the case.

Have you looked at your CPU cooler aswell? Check the CPU temps and give the heatsink a clean out if the fins are clogged with dust.

The bottom of the case beneath the psu is vented, so it allows good airflow. Ill keep it pointed up for now to help expel the warm air a little more.

My CPU cooler is clean as a whistle, and it's only cooling a Q6600 at stock so I doubt that's a problem?

My case is a Fractal Design R2
