Single monitor 2560x1600. Which GPU ....

Thats a very good question.

if its was the master GPU then no.

if its the Slave GPU then yes

i had a 4870x2 back in the day, and the second GPU on it went bad and when ever crossfire was required i would get major issues in games, but with it off it was fine.
Turns out one of the GPU's had failed

It's possible.

First time i have heard of master and slave in relation to graphics cards, thought that was exclusive to the IDE hard disks/Opticals lol.
Well i have my IGPU that i could fall back on, should i ever have a problem. Just trying to figure out pros and cons of each inorder to arrive at a purchasing decision.
My preference is the single card solution, be it single or dual GPU. Also looking to downsize to MATX from EATX.

I used the term Master and slave as it made sence to me :P

Could just call them GPU0 and GPU1, Where GPU0 Is always used and GPU1 is only used in crossfire mode.

If GPU1 Fails to work, then the card will still function well if you disable crossfire mode
If GPU0 Fails then the card may cease to work unless it can switch to GPU1 for main use.

I am also looking at the 7990 as a replacement for my 7970 if AMD dont release any news of the 8000 series to be launched this year, I have an ITX system with only One PCI-E Slot :(

Titan is a perfect size for ITX systems ;)

Aah i see you what you mean now.
Out of interest, what ITX mobo are you using?

Did you overclock them to the same clock speed? If you didn't it isn't a valid test. I used two 680x as well so your first point doesn't hold true :)

I won't imagine you did.

Sorry not being funny or anything but I don't really pay much attention to people's stories. I like numbers :).

Its totally valid if I didnt overclock any of them. Out of the box they are faster. Yes I could overclock the 7950s but I can also overclock the 7970s should I wish.

The 7970s are at a faster clock speed out the box though than a 7950 especially if they're GE >.<

I was clearly referring to a clock for clock comparison. That was the ~5% comparison point.

Hi. Excuse jumping on this thread.

I've been considering the same for the same monitor and looking to get back into gaming. PC for work at the mo and been using on board graphics.

Current spec:
MotherBoard: Asus AM3 M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3
Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1055T
Graphics: On Board (ATI Radeon HD 4250)
Disks: 1x Samsung SSD - 1x 2TB HD
Memory: 8GB Corsair DDR3-133 (667MHz)
Monitor: Dell U2711 running 2560x1440
Corsair HX 520 power supply.

I'm keen to play ARMA 3 and Elite when that comes out. I take it the 7970 with 3GB video memory would be good enough? Also would I need to upgrade anything else or is the rest of the kit ok?

Thanks :)
