Cypriot Austerity Measures

Well need to - costs too much to transfer money from the UK - though maybe not now... however, paying bills is easier with a local bank account and it's easier to keep my foreign existence away from the UK ;)

Not happy about this - I'm going to be landed with nearly a grand's worth to pay :(

You'll get the equivalent of the "tax" in shares in the bank though.

I'm sure they'll be worth a fortune in a years time - just like Apple's :p

This is quite frankly disgusting, you live or work in a country you should put up with their taxes, just another government decision makin out the military to be special, it's ridiculous

I read it that they are only compensating our military and government officials (i.e. people there not by choice). Not expats looking for a cheaper and warmer place to spend their retirement years. If so, I'm glad they are compensating them (I assume they are taking ownership of the shares too!)

So you're saying that foreigners should not be liable for tax due in the county it's kept?

no im saying exactly that, why is the military any different they chose to join up and go work abroad and pocket the extra money they get for doing so, they should pay the appropriate taxes levied on them for keeping their money in a cypriot bank, I dont see why the UK tax payer should help them out.

Its not fair on anyone, but I dont see why this should be a problem for the taxpayers in the UK

Because of all the places in the world they could have ended up, it was the UK tax payer that posted them to Cyprus?

We didnt though, they chose to join the military or foreign office, knowing that they could be posted anywhere, surely thats a risk that you might get screwed by some crazy tax. There is no conscription in this country, its a career choice that's why I have little sympathy for soldier worship and special measures.

I don't agree. To suggest that it's an occupational hazard that you would be subject to a completely unprecedented tax on savings is ludicrous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they pay UK tax and not the local rates of the country they've been posted to?

This is a tough one to sell to the populous, but the President is trying his best..

"You can either lose 10% of your savings or lose them all"
