Do you get free games with xbox live gold ??

All the features that come with being online, netflix, party chat, iplayer etc etc. You can get it for less than £40 though online, but it still should be free.

You need to pay extra for Netflix.

I hate to have to point this out, but if you are PAYING for playstation plus, then the games are not FREE as you put it.

what else are you actually getting with PS+? you pay for it to get the games. Now im not saying its a bad deal, looks to me like there are some ok titles.

What you get with PSPlus:
Up to 65 games per year
Money-saving discounts
Exclusive access
Online storage for game saves
Automatic software updates

So lets just say the 65 games (which in cost total well over the £25 a paid for a year) you still get the other things listed. All in all I would say you do get the games free because your getting them at about 38p per game without taking consideration of the other things.

Indeed, the GB of cloud storage and automatic updates is almost worth the ~£3.50/month on it's own - I never have to sit and wait for updates when I just want to play a game as the PS3 does itself at 4am, and if my HDD crashes or the console YLODs I don't lose any saves as they're all online :p

The discounts and free games is just a bonus ;)

You get discounts on new games with PS+ as well as discounts on DLC. Also there is sometimes exclusive demos, betas etc (although I think you get the latter two with XBL Gold as well).

You get an on-line services that doesn't go offline for a month...

But yes, XBL is not a choice, people pay it because they have too.

the PS3 relies on the person hosting the game to have a good net connection

Actually, more PS3 games are hosted on dedicated servers than 360 ones. Or at least that was the case last time i checked.

Xbox Live in its current state is ok i guess for the generation, they sit in the enviable position of being the only ones to get the online system completely 'right'. It is because of this that they are able to justify charging for it, I don't see Sony making the same mistakes with the PS4 so they will need to up their game or change their business model in the coming year.

No body has to pay for it.

It's still a choice if people got together and refused to keep funding it MS would have to change there tune but people wont so MS will keep milking it.

No free games, but we get plenty of adverts.

Why do people moan about adverts on XBL gold?! You get like one advert per blade/tab really if that and the ad's aren't invasive at all. Only the LoveFilm makes any noise and that is only if you move over it. It's not like they are splashed all over the page and like YouTube now where you have to sit through one before you get to the next section for example.

Gold also gives you early access to certain demo's etc doesn't it?

The ads are terrible from Lovefilm/Now TV to ads for crappy old games/ music video's and films. Hell I watched a Linkin Park video only to find out it was all about a song for the latest Medal of Honor game which came out last year.

The least they can do it promote new games/music/films.

XBL is just like Sky, you have to pay for it and then sit through adverts every 10 minutes.......

There's a name for people who defend these companies and their business practices.... Muggs

I think it's more the fact that you're paying for a premium subscription, and still you get ads. As a Silver member seeing ads I don't think it'd be as big a deal, but I guess some people would expect not to see ads when they're paying yearly/monthly to use the service.

I see where you are coming from and it's not like they can use the argument that they need to generate income as thats where the sub comes in to it. In regards to the ad's, do Microsoft use any kind of tech to look at what you play/watch to decide what you get ads for? As I can honestly can't recall ever seeing stuff to do with last year. Most of what I see on the Movie/TV blade for instance is always current sports events and recent film releases. :/

I'd hardly say I was a mug too, I just don't get annoyed by the small little square ads that you can ignore.

Granted I've not been on my 360 in a while, but I don't recall there being any ads tailored to me specifically (this could have changed since I was last on, but I just remember the generic LoveFilm ad, the Xbox Insider, and one for whatever sale was on at the time). It might appeal to people a bit more if it was targeted at things they've been watching or playing, but even if they are just the generic ads it doesn't bother me too much since I only ever see the dashboard when I'm not in a game which is probably only a fraction of the time :p

So you pay for XBL and you still get the ads in the dash, i agree.. not great but you didn't pay to remove those ads you paid for online play, removing the ads in exchange for money was never on the table so why cry when you don't get it.

You cant compare it to sky, where you effectively pay for the TV programming and then they continually interrupt that TV viewing to ram adverts down your throat to get more money out of you. Its like inviting someone to come to the cinema with you, paying for their ticket and having them talk over the movie, block your view and spit in your popcorn. Anyone who pays for sky TV deserves what they get tbh for being stupid enough to sign up in the first place.

Sony is the most evil in this respect, they are the only one to have patched additional advertising into a game after its released as they did with wipeout, they not only put adverts around the track in game they also put video ads into the loading screens that you couldn't skip even if the loading was done while the advert was only half way through. They backed down on this approach but only after huge backlash not out of consideration for their customers

Or how about the way they just straight nickel and dime you right from the off... they sell you HD gaming console and blu-ray player and ship it with analog video leads only, no HDMI cable, no network lead to get online, no headset for online play. Right from the off they were the most expensive console but you get the bare minimum for your money and they deliberately leave out things you need to charge you more for them, and then there's removing features... just wtf

I'd hardly say they're the most evil :p between Microsoft and Sony, the latter makes me feel more like a valued customer. Not only because of the absolute bargain that is PS+ (and the additional bonuses you get with it), but the community interaction between the devs and other PS staff through the PS Blog. I love being able to discuss things with them, and get news straight from the horses mouth. I take it they've removed the ads from WipEout now? Don't recall having seen anything like that since I bought it a few months ago.

As for the lack of an HDMI/Ethernet cable - I didn't get them with my 360 either, but they're probably only going to set you back a couple of quid (I had plenty spare so it didn't other me anyways). As to why they don't include these I don't know, but it's not that big a deal is it? I'm sure there are still people out there using TVs that only have SCART/RGB/Composite connections :p
