Pc graphics. No where near as good as consoles !

I see where you are coming from, i don't see why efficency comes into the equation though..

The games played on a console and on a PC are different in design anyway.. PS3 and Xbox 360 run at 720p and PC games run a 1080p and higher.. (apart from Dark souls)

I guess the point i was trying to make was purely from a performance standpoint....there seems to be a lot of people trying to directly compare a PS4 GPU to a PC GPU, but it just can't be done.

So until we actually see some games for ourselves (and i don't mean all these pre-release demo videos) we can't judge how good they're going to look (or not) in comparison to PCs

You are right..

a lot of comparisons have been done between the PS4 on board and the 7970M and the 7950M..

The difference is the 7950M/7970M are seperate cards, like desktop graphics card and the PS4's graphics is within the processor. This will affect the performance, so to compare the two seems a bit pointless..

Like you say, until we see it we can't be certain.

What I meant by efficiency, was that they manage to squeeze a serious amount of performance out of hardware over the lifespan of the products. (7 years)

If you comparitively look at high end PC spec from the same same time the PS3 was released, such as a Nvidia 8800 GTX, a Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM....you'd find that would run like pony on modern games with anything other than a low IQ settings, where as the PS3/Xbox does keep chugging them out and looking not so bad.

Uncharted 3 - Tomb Raider PC

now, tell me, uncharted 3 on the aging Ps3 platform, Tomb Raider PC which looked amazing, but come on, you needed some serious hardware to get Tomb Raider on the PC all singing..

Ps3 when a developer really goes for it, it can turn out some amazing looking games on such modest (comparable to a top end gaming PC) hardware..

Ps4 will do the same, but PC has for most got the consoles for graphics, but consoles can, and do turn out some amazing looking games.

try playing tomb raider pc at 720p on a TV you will find TV's hide a lot monitors show and games run much better at lower resolutions.
It probably wasn't ported very well either which should change with ps4 games as the ps4 architecture will be much more like a pc where as the ps3 isn't

But consoles run at 720p or lower and admittedly I have not seen tomb raider on PS3 but I can guarantee it looks nothing like the PC version at 1080p with AA/AF and high graphics settings....

It would probably take a PS4 to run tomb raider smoothly as well as it can run on PC.

I don't know how people can think that Xbox 360 and Ps3 are actually good graphics now... Maybe when they came out but they run everything at extremely low resolution and bad FPS. Maybe some people have partial sight loss and are not aware of it?

Uncharted 3 looks absolutely phenomenal considering how old the hardware is now. I have a 7950wf spec pc and I have tomb raider at 2440p and although it looks better, it doesn't look massively better. Will be .interesting to see what next generation holds

Show them some games that are on consoles like skyrim and show them the difference also maybe a heavy modded version aswell.
Then games that are only on pc maybe anno 2040 and shogun 2

I am not sure how you can think that 1440p on a 27" does not look massively better than 720p on a TV....

I think it is impressive what they have got out of the ancient hardware in consoles but really you cannot compare it to PC because PC runs at high resolution with AA/AF and consoles run at bad resolution with no AA... Even identical graphics on PC vs PS3 will take twice as much power on PC due to resolution and AA....

Hopefully on the PS4 they will make it standard to do 1080p with AA. But I expect as the PS4 gets older and more out of date they will replace AA with post processing and maybe even scale the resolutions like they do on the Xbox 360. Mainstream gamers don't seem to really notice things like AA/AF and resolution as much I suppose and are more impressed by effects etc.

Surely if you want to compare graphics or power then the console should be compared to a up to date gaming pc and not an office pc.

Whilst there is more efficiency to be had there isn't THAT much in it.

I don't know what you mean by pony, but you say the PC would be on low IQ settings but this is what the consoles are running at currently, pretty much the equivalent of the lowest settings and they're not even doing it at 720p. A large chunk of games including Black Ops 2 run almost as low as 800x600 resolution.

I did a quick google and it showed an 8800 GTX going 30FPS in Crysis 2 at very high settings @ 1080p... Sure, not up to scratch for your average PC gamer but probably about what the 360/PS3 would be gunning for FPS wise. Googling again shows that Crysis 2 runs at 1152x720 on 360 & 1024x720 on PS3.

It was the first game that popped into my head. Even some exclusive titles that aren't cross platform like Resistance 3 just look terrible.

Mm yes this is exactly what I just said.

1280x720 pixels (Best case scenario on Xbox360 and PS3 as they often run lower than this) = 921600 pixels

1920 x 1200 Pixels (PC gaming monitor) = 2304000 pixels....

Thats 2.5 times the amount of pixels already and then add on 2x or 4x AA and thats another 30% performance drop....

That is 3x the horsepower needed just to run the same graphics at good resolution with AA.

I know that PS3/Xbox cant compare to the high res, AA etc of a modern day PC, but they do very well to squeeze what they can over the course of 7 years....albeit with lower res and lower FPS etc.

Uncharted is a good example as mentioned above...which is the only console game i've played in the last 4 or so years and couldnt believe how good it looked on my old dusty PS3.

I'd be interested to see how the 8800 GTX fairs in Crysis 3?

Aside of that they are all great gaming platforms that each have their own benefits....I will always be primarily a PC gamer, as I love the customisation and having the best IQ I can afford.

I expect if you tried to run Uncharted 3 or Crysis 3 at whatever resolution it is on the PS3 on a 8800GTX it would run very well...

I'm sure most console players just think that they own cutting edge hardware. A lot of younger gamers probably don't really know what a PC can do.

You would think that people do not actually own the internet. It takes literally 5 minutes find out about PC gaming.

Also lets not forget PC gaming is usually played at 60fps +, where as console is limited to 30fps is it not?

Most PC gamers would find 30 fps as a slide show.

You cant inherently say a PC will have better graphics than a console, because if the spec of the PC is an old dog, then it wont be with onboard graphics etc.

PC's are just more customisable, allowing people to put in hardware that far surpasses consoles and thus obtain a better IQ and far better framerates, should they have the desire and the capital to do so.

This is interesting in that the 60FPS or nothing approach adopted by many PC gamers (including myself) is a relatively recent phenomenon that has only come about due to the emergence of consoles as being the predominant AAA gaming platforms. Prior to PS4, 360, it was very normal for newly released PC titles to run on reasonably high end rigs at around 30-40FPS if the settings were turned up. When BF2 was released, (just prior to consoles) the top end cards at the time were the ATI 850X or the Nvidia Geforce 6800 GTX. With all settings maxed in BF2, sub 30 FPS could be expected at times, even with those latest cards. This was the way that I always remembered PC gaming before the consoles which lead to a constant upgrade itch due to the ever persistent feeling that your gaming expierence could always be so much better.

Back on topic. PC gaming is a very different beast to console gaming and PC gamers are very different beasts to console gamers. A PC gamer is an obsessive compulsive who iw either willing or feels compelled to pile a great deal of his financial and mental resources into his gaming rig. Console gamers on otherhand, generally couldn't tolerate either the price or the effort required for gaming PC's and simply want something that sits next to the TV in the front room, is cheap, and is as simple as turning on and off. This describes the majority of people and no matter how much the shiny sparkling gfx and smooth frame rates of a PC version of a game is dangled in front of thier noses, they just aren't going to be motivated to go for it.

To be honest, the average console gamer is probably a more balanced and rounded human being than the average PC gamer. In this regard, I find it curiously interesting that the only country in the world where the market for PC versions of AAA titles is greater than the markets for thier console counterparts, is Germany.

If Sony introduce the protection thing where you cannot sell games second hand then it will probably work out cheaper to be a PC gamer.
