Just had the weirdest phone call...

Never had anything like this, heaps of nuisance calls though.

Same, as soon as it starts getting too personal (or what I deem it to be) or they're selling something I hang up. I know it's more fun to lead them on and **** them off by thinking they're getting their commission when really you're just wasting their time, but I can never be bothered.
 
I don't know if it was a prank call, but I had a withheld call once where they simply asked "do you canoe?" and hung up. It was quite a few years ago, 2001-ish, so was before phishing scams I think.

You will probably get a load of crap delivered to your company now with your name on the shipping details.

So you had it as well? Interesting. I guess it was one of those prank-a-mate services where you dialled a number, gave your mate's number out to an operator then they would phone that person up with the prank. Or it could have been a soundboard as it was around the same time as the Arnold Schwarzenegger soundboard prank calls. We did a few of those at uni :D

Someone hung up on me once after asking them the very same question.

That has to be the best prank call ever! There is no answer you could give to turn the tables :D

One of the tricks contracting agents play is to ask about previous contracts and who I reported to, under the pretext of obtaining a reference when in fact thay are just trying to get a list of names who they can call to offer their services.
One of the strangest phone calls I (over) heard was in an small open office when my boss, talking to a recruitment agent over the phone said "What do you mean the money will be deposited in an accouint of my choice"

This - they are fishing for contacts in you company to the try to sell candidates into. Next time just give them the name of someone you dont like. you just have to get through the set up story first making you believe you might be in a position for a new higher paid job

To me, it sounds like someone is trying to canvas experienced workers and rip-off their experiences and claim them as their own.
