Friend has asked me for a build. Just the box, needs everything but a monitor and keyboard. GPU needs to be able to do HDMI to TV. :) Cheers, I'm trying to make one myself, but not really clued up on the lower end CPU's.

If he needs an OS then use evaluation of windows 8 as a try before he buys for 3 months. This will get him up and going, i'm deliberately under budget as I would try and source a second hand GPU like the 1GB 460 (~50) or maybe a 6850 or 6870.

Don't you think the below Intel setup would play any game better than a Trinity?

You could use an Intel Pentium G860 3.00GHz and save £30

A Z77 mother would be better but that's £30 extra.

Mate, don't buy new CPU in this budget. Buy safely used one i5 2300/2400 for 80-90 quids as CPUs die rarest among all components and it's non-K model which guarantees you no insane voltage & freq used by predecessor.

The 2TB HDD is no longer a bargain :(

Best I could do for a basic intel setup with a good GPU. BF3 isn't very well optimised for dual core CPUs though. There is THIS Z68 B grade mobo but it might possibly need sata cables. It would allow an i5K upgrade and for it to be overclocked.

Very tricky budget to work to especially if he wants it all new. If he needs an OS that's a massive chunk of the budget gone. I haven't even added a mouse if he needs one of those too.

Just so you know, those Coolermaster elite 500W PSU's are shocking, an extra £6 to get a better PSU is well worth it.

Yes it would play the game better than a Trinity setup.

Also BF3 is fine on a i3 dual core CPU (with Hyperthreading)

Hyperthreading does not really have any effect on gaming, as a 2Ghz Dual Core CPU without Hyperthreading has a theoretical processing power of 4Ghz over 2 threads (2Ghz per thread), with hyperthreading it would have 4Ghz over 4 threads (1Ghz per thread), allowing 4 threads but effectively half the speed.

When speed is not really a limiting factor then the extra threads come in to play, like encoding where multiple slower threads benefit over singular faster ones.
