My NS1000s still have no problems (going on 4 years now I think). Having said that, the quality of materials used has varied in the past and there have been bad batches.
Having owned both NS1000s and Creative Aurvana Lives I would recommend the Goldrings.
Regarding other Goldring headphones I still have a pair of DR150s (very good for the price, undamaged). Have also previously owned DR100s (pretty good but unspectacular), DR50s (sound excellent for the price I paid but did exhibit some superficial plastic cracking) and GX200s (mine didn't break but seemed flimsy and I've heard better IEMs for the money).
why did you prefer the NS1000's over the Creative?
More detailed treble and richer mids. This led to improved positional sound in games and more realistic representation of human voices (and stringed instruments) in music.
The positional sound of the NS1000s in games was largely due to their excellent representation of Dolby Headphone (and to a lesser extent CMSS-3D Headphone).
I originally bought the CAL!s expecting them to be an upgrade to the NS1000s. After comparing the two side by side in games and various musical genres I decided to sell the CAL!s.
The CAL!s did have plenty going for them. They are extremely comfortable with an enjoyable punchy sound signature and are very easily driven from portable sources.
The NS1000s benefit from amplification, especially so with noise cancelling off. A FiiO e5 is a cheap amp that works very well with them. Pick the wrong amp or source and the NS1000s (with noise cancelling off) can sound shockingly bad. Have tried them with some pretty expensive tube amps (that were unsuited to them) and they sounded dreadful. With noise cancelling on the NS1000s do much better out of a portable source or directly from a soundcard (but they use batteries that way and the noise cancelling generates a slighly audible hiss that is noticeable when your audio source gets quiet).
It's easy to tell if the NS1000s need better amplification with noise cancelling off. They will sound muddy and boomy with poorly controlled bass and obscured treble. I have never heard another set of headphones where amplification can make such a huge difference.
has anyone listed to the steelSeries siberia v2 and the goldrings dr50/100 or ns1000's, if so was there a major difference!
