are people still having issues with these cracking? my plantronics headset has died so looking for either a new headset or headphones and clip on mic..

budget £60

any suggestions

For NS1000s?

I can answer, as I have a set had them for a while and not had a issue, mine is paired off with a Fiio E5 mobile amp too so you would be looking at £75 there about.

As for the headset, I have and like the Sibera V2s, come in a range of colours that suits your fancy. They are not too basy just right in fact.

My NS1000s still have no problems (going on 4 years now I think). Having said that, the quality of materials used has varied in the past and there have been bad batches.

Having owned both NS1000s and Creative Aurvana Lives I would recommend the Goldrings.

Regarding other Goldring headphones I still have a pair of DR150s (very good for the price, undamaged). Have also previously owned DR100s (pretty good but unspectacular), DR50s (sound excellent for the price I paid but did exhibit some superficial plastic cracking) and GX200s (mine didn't break but seemed flimsy and I've heard better IEMs for the money).

why did you prefer the NS1000's over the Creative?

More detailed treble and richer mids. This led to improved positional sound in games and more realistic representation of human voices (and stringed instruments) in music.

The positional sound of the NS1000s in games was largely due to their excellent representation of Dolby Headphone (and to a lesser extent CMSS-3D Headphone).

I originally bought the CAL!s expecting them to be an upgrade to the NS1000s. After comparing the two side by side in games and various musical genres I decided to sell the CAL!s.

The CAL!s did have plenty going for them. They are extremely comfortable with an enjoyable punchy sound signature and are very easily driven from portable sources.

The NS1000s benefit from amplification, especially so with noise cancelling off. A FiiO e5 is a cheap amp that works very well with them. Pick the wrong amp or source and the NS1000s (with noise cancelling off) can sound shockingly bad. Have tried them with some pretty expensive tube amps (that were unsuited to them) and they sounded dreadful. With noise cancelling on the NS1000s do much better out of a portable source or directly from a soundcard (but they use batteries that way and the noise cancelling generates a slighly audible hiss that is noticeable when your audio source gets quiet).

It's easy to tell if the NS1000s need better amplification with noise cancelling off. They will sound muddy and boomy with poorly controlled bass and obscured treble. I have never heard another set of headphones where amplification can make such a huge difference.

the thing putting me off the ns1000's is the reported cracking on the headband...

so I may have a look at superlux, creative aurvana live, steelSeries siberia v2

My ns1000's headband cracked several months ago, (bought in august 2010), put a bit of superglue and insulating tape on the cracked part and theyve been fine since.

The thing with the ns1000 is the headband is a metal band inside all the padding etc and being so light a simple bit of tape actually holds them together fine unlike when goldring dr150 crack which will lose their clamp force etc with just tape.

Bought 2 pairs of DR150's the Christmas before. One pair are still in there box for when needed.

The other pair that I've been wearing over the past year cracked on the head band. This happened just over one month ago. So I thought lets see what I can do with a little super glue.

I was careful in applying it and left it to dry on my headphones stand.

Been using them since my repair, and so far so good.

has anyone listed to the steelSeries siberia v2 and the goldrings dr50/100 or ns1000's, if so was there a major difference!

Yes me, They are my fav headset, but the goldrings blows them out the water :p So I use Goldrings and a speedlink clip on mic with a Fiio E5 amp these days..would be nice to treat them to a good sound card again through
