BMW 123d economy question, any owners/testers?

yeah I can't imagine it's going to be 20% off..

anyway, long chat.. bmw are lining up to do absolutely nothing as I suspected. I'm having a really hard time being direct enough with these guys so they realise I'm serious..

It went in with a bunch of niggles (remember I've only had it a couple of weeks so it's gone back with every tiny thing I can find) and they said "have they fixed the aux port?"

Well yes but in context that's somewhat irrelevant.
What are your gripes with the car? Unless the sales guy told you that you personally should get the same fuel economy from your new 123d as your old 320d, then if the car is working correctly (which it seems to be) you don't have a very strong position from that perspective.

45 MPG from a 320d and 37-39 MPG from a 123d is really quite reasonable. However, your comment about not getting over 40 MPG under any circumstance doesn't seem plausible, if you achieve 37-39 driving reasonably normally.

I am not entirely sure what you expect them to do?

no neither am I, I guess basically I don't trust that they're actually doing anything other than the bare minimum.

So frustrating though, if you bought pretty much anything else and it failed to get anywhere near the manufacturers claims you'd just take it back but as with so many other things to do with probably the second biggest purchase anyone ever makes.. because it's got wheels those rules don't count.

I mean I'm not even convinced there's anything wrong with it other than it attracts a load of hype about how wonderful it is and the truth is more likely its average and nothing more.

If I remember correctly the 123d has shorter ratios than the 120d which is why the economy is worse on the motorway. I think this was for the manual box though so not sure if the auto was the same.

you have taken the hadbrake off haven't you ?

Seriously though, I don't and would not expect BMW to take it back because the MPG was not what you expected unless you have it in writing from the salesman.

Try driving the extraurban cycle on a flat road with no traffic and simulated air resistance and see what fuel economy you get then. Oh, and measure it properly instead of relying on the OBC.

For the record, the OBC in my Avensis was always more than 10% optimistic and sometimes as much as 35%.
No matter what it told me, I refused to believe that my 1.8 petrol pulling 1.5t of car was getting 56-60mpg on a mixture of A roads and town driving.

It's car dependent - going back to the e36 (no idea if you still can) it was adjustable when you figured out what the obc should be reading, same with the civic I'm sure I changed that when I first got it too.

Hmm, I would still say something is not right. For such a light car, they are very rapid and can quite easily keep up with bigger machinery ie, 330d, 530d, etc. Sensible driving on the motorway will see 44-47mpg in the 530d so the 123d should manage at least that.

Just out of interest, do you have an iDrive system in this car?

yes I do, I've got it back and its basically exactly the same. They said they got 42mpg in a run round their locality, funnily enough the trip computer said 7mpg when I got it back.

No idea what to do now.

Reason I asked about the iDrive is because, historically, whenever I get my car back from the dealer and it's had a "scope" the MPG units have been reset to US/MPG (which shows a lower output than UK MPG). Worth checking in the units section of iDrive, just to make sure :)
