Feeling the want for a new Mac Pro Are we likely to see a refresh this year? As they really are poor vfm in the current price/spec

You might not have heard about the sales ban due to new regulations (nothing wrong the with machine aside from the urgent need for a refresh): http://www.macrumors.com/2013/01/31...fective-march-1-over-regulatory-requirements/

This could mean three things. Either we will see a new Mac Pro pretty soon (which appears unlikely considering that we haven't heard anything about it really), Apple will continue on and release an updated/new machine in the distant future, or Apple will kill off the Mac Pro entirely.

This said, the new iMacs are powerful machines, definitely worth a look.

As mentioned above - Apple are no longer selling the Mac Pro in the EU in case you injure yourself on the unprotected fans! Resellers are fine to shift their existing stock.

In 2012 Tim Cook said "Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today’s event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year."

Considering a i7 iMac weighs in under 2 grand it's a cracking bit of kit for the money

But I'd really like to see a new dual CPU pro with some beefy specs

Just an FYI from an Apple Representative @ Insight:

The Mac Pro is no longer it has gone end of life. We had waited quite a long time for a new Mac Pro with a thunderbolt display to be bought out, but as it happens Apple discontinued the range altogether.
For new machines your customer will have to either consider iMac 21.5" or 27" or Mac Mini with storage.

It does not look like Apple will replace the Mac Pro.

****.

I work for a design consultancy and i have waited for these 2013 Mac Pros to replace the 2008 Mac Pros and now i cant..... Not pleased.

I'm not sure I'd trust anyone conveying messages like that, Insight or not. Best to take it from the horses mouth and leave it at that, we all know what Apple are like, secretive barely covers it. That said, I don't think there will be any more mac pros unfortunately.

Indeed, as with anything not from the horses mouth, take with a pinch of salt.

Just spoke to the said representative (previously worked for Apple). She said that there are no plans what-so-ever in replacing the Mac Pro for the EU because of the very little money they get from the market now. She said that of Apples income, only 3% of it is from the sales of Mac Pros, eliminate the EU from that and it's probably still 2.5%. Now compare that to the cost of fixing the issue of this model.

I would be very surprised if that's the end of the Mac Pro for the EU, but it certainly is for the current/2013 model.

They already killed Xserve and neutered the MacBook Pro so it wouldn't surprise me if they finished off the professional desktop. I just don't think they want to be in that business anymore.

Indeed. We still have xserves :D and X-RAID!!! It's still alive and kicking! Shame they stopped doing them :(

Rubbish. They won't know anymore than apple store staff. Not to mention they are still sold outside of the EU.

Given the 7xxx and quadro drivers in 10.8.3 shows apple are clearly working towards a new Mac Pro.

fingers crossed theres something due shortly,

sorely tempted just to get an imac

Waiting for the new Mac Pro to potentially add a desktop to our otherwise laptop based office. It feels like we have been waiting a long time!

Also considering just getting an iMac now.

Yes they are sold outside of the EU as normal, which is why you can see the workings going on i (and the rep) never said otherwise. Which is why i am considering asking our old sister company in the US to ship us some as a last resort.
However, they can't sell them in the EU currently unless they resolve the issue, which there is NO positive news about as of yet.

I am keeping an eye on a redesign for us EU users in the meantime, i really hope they do.

A place I worked in 2011 bought two Xserves for a job at the end of Apples final production run. Orders apparently went up massively when they announced final sales date, so caused a delay.

We were even told that we could likely sell them on for a profit afterwards!

My 2008 Mac Pro is still going pretty strong, which is amazing given its age, longest I've used a single machine. I would have replaced it with another.

Like the Servers though, for professional use they are only really bought by self-employed who use them for work, or very small businesses who want a full Mac setup. These days, the bulk discounts that most businesses get from PC manufacturers mean Apple doesn't get a look in.
