The Budget 2013 - 12:30

The Torys have accomplished a remarkable feat: in less than a single term they've become more hated than Labour was after three.

Your obsession with bashing a government ruling a country you don't live in never ceases to amaze me :p

I'm a British citizen and my wife and I still pay tax to that government, so I have every right to bash! :p

Are you sure? On my hateometer I'm pretty sure labour are ahead by a country mile.

Let's ask the great British public:

This week’s YouGov/Sunday Times poll is up here. Topline figures are CON 29%, LAB 41%, LDEM 12%, UKIP 12%.

Economy
The economic trackers are as bad as usual for the government – people think the government are managing the economy badly by 65% to 25%, 67% think George Osborne is doing a bad job as Chancellor, only 11% of people expect their economic situation to get better in the next twelve months.

Asked if the government’s economic strategy is working only 7% think it is, 36% think it isn’t but will in the fullness of time, 45% think it is unlikely to ever work.

Take note of these figures – they are the background to this week’s budget and we’ll see next week if it has a positive or negative effect (in recent years budgets have had negative effects far more often than positive ones).

(Source).

With Labour currently enjoying a lead of 12% over the Tories, it's not difficult to see which direction the hate is blowing.

Depends on the media outlet you read, doesn't it?

No, it depends on the polling figures. I couldn't give a toss about the media.

As you don't live here to know anything different.

There's this thing called the internet. Have you heard of it? Why not give yourself a treat and try some today? Go on, be a devil!

Good to see you chaps are all talking about the budget.....

Have they confirmed a rise in VAT? What's it up to now?

But public transport prices are generally going up, too. It's not like they're not impacted, is it?

agreed. silly money now. its £4 for the mrs to do the 3mile trip to town on the bus and thats not even a return.

what i mean is that they shouldnt be trying to tax us off the road when public transport isnt capable in smaller, more rural areas

And still in the face of all the governments pontification about bringing the "bankers" to book. Barclay's chooses budget day to release news of this years bonuses. This is a bank that fiddled the Libor rate, mis-sold ppi, and lost billions and is being investigated for fraud. Yet still thinks it is acceptable to pay huge bonuses.

"Last year former chief executive Bob Diamond collected pay, bonuses and perks of £17m. In 2011, the top five Barclay's bosses shared a payout of £110m."

Yes, because London gets off scot free and hardly contributes anything in terms of taxation. Public transport is hardly free either.

but its good enough for people to use and not need a car. around here you need a car. and public transport down there is cheaper than up here

if focus was actually put into other areas than london then those places might be able to help out more. btw. my region is actually 2nd best to london. its not one of those areas where masses of london tax is spent. its almost neutral. which is impressive for a rural county.

What? My annual train pass for London cost ~£4,500.

this has to be the biggest thing in politics and economics which winds me up at the moment

tax avoidance = legal (and pretty much everyone does it in some form within the law)
tax evasion = illegal

I think whoever ended up in power this term would have been (universally) hated. Too many unpopular decisions that needed to be made unfortunately, regardless of who was in power and the direction they took.

Why does it wind you up so much? People will always want to find loopholes that allow them to pay less tax.
