Guys,

me and Mrs Joe, want to go visit the Nat History Museum in London.
What's the cheapest/best way of getting there from Nottingham?

It seems that South Kensington is the nearest tube to the museum, but there aint a direct line from Notitngham (by train).
Never been to our capital city so i'm clueless really.
The tube network confuses the bejesus outta me.

We thought of using a bus operator like National Express as they are cheaper than rail, but they are slooowww, and it's only a day trip.
Train is the obvious option but tickets are working out around £70 each (return), too much for just a day trip.

Thought about driving to somewhere outside the congestion zone, then tubing it in, but again, i'm clueless about all this.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

From my also limited knowledge, wouldn't a train to westminster & then tube to Kensington be the best route?

When you want to go cause if you book in advance the train is quite cheap. I got tickets for £24 return 1st class from Birmingham New Street.

From Nottingham you will end up in king's cross / st pancras, get the picadilly line to south ken. As you are old enough to get a train on your own I would you suggest you stay a bit longer and get to know London a bit better. While many of the pigeon fancying dole bludgers on here don't seem keen on it, it's one of the greatest cities in the world.

You lucky so and so.

Love that place and so want to take my daughter :) The Science Museum round the corner is also amazing.

I am a Manc by trade and would agree with this man.

Love London as a City.

Lol, nice retort, thanks. :D

Money is a bit of an issue though right now. If it's gonna cost us approx. £150 just to get us both there and back, it's probably a no-go i'm afraid.

Someone else suggested driving to Stanmore or Westfield, park the car there all day then tube it in.

Thought about a hotel off trivago (approx. £70 for a double room) that has parking as that would give us pretty much 2 days.

Pop into the Science museum while you're there - it's pretty much next door. Both are amazing. I took my mates last year on my Birthday (we're nerds anyway but even if you're not it's still excellent) and we had a great time. I don't think it's as good as when I was little, but that's probably just selective memory

+1 for a visit to the Science Museum which is literally over the road. It has some amazing stuff that all the regular tourists were just walking past - the actual Stephenson's Rocket, the actual DNA molecule model built by Watson & Crick, an actual Command Module from one of the Apollo missions.

But the most fun bit is the kid's area on the top floor. I don't care that it's for kids, bottle rockets shooting over your head in a special metal cage never gets boring.

I was so bored by the NHM when we went last year. It's soooo old and dated now, some of the info cards and displays looked more pre-historic then what they were trying to envisage. Plus the one thing we wanted to see was the dinosaurs and there was a queue around the whole museum for it.

The science museum was far more entertaining.

Just get the train to King's Cross then the Piccadilly line to South Ken. Robert's your mother's uncle.

Arrive early, leave late and have a bit of a wander about what is the centre of the universe and greatest city in the said universe :p

Guys, we've wandered slightly.
I'm trying to keep the costs down, and train straight from Nottingham is around £150 total. That's before we even spend a single penny in London.
Oh...and we're goign there on 2nd or 3rd of april.

The British muesum near Holborn is quite good, don't think i have been to natural history.

Why don't you drive down to watford and catch overground in to euston. From there you can get on tube and go anywhere. You can walk to natural history museum from euston, while you on yer walk can stop off at british library. You could get a off peak travel card 1 day which cost i think £9 each.

What time are you travelling and how soon are you looking to book? go off peak and book some time in advance, can't believe you cant get it cheaper then £150 for two.

As mentioned 2rd or 3rd of April, so a day trip, and thus early-ish start. If train was thinking after 8.30am to avoid rush hour traffic and prices.
Would return anytime around 7pm i guess.

I think you will still be in peak time at 8:30, from Norwich to London I think it goes off peak at 10am, and depart London 7:30ish pm for off peak return.
