Yaris and sluggish gas pedal

Got my wife a 2010 Yaris 1.33 TR recently and I've noticed that it has what I can only describe as a sluggish accelerator. What I mean by this is put your foot down on the pedal and there's a distinct delay between the press and the engine revs climbing, there's also a similar delay when taking your foot off, so foot off the gas and the engine revs will die much slower then say in my Accord or the wifes previous Civic.

I've done a quick google and there are suggestions that range from cable needs greasing to that's how the car is to dual mass flywheel (whatever that is :)) Doesn't cause any real issues except that it's very easy to stall the car and when I was driving car I found that the engine was racing between gear changes as the revs would still be high when depressing the clutch, do everything slower and it seems fine.

Anybody have any views/thoughts on this, before I take it to Toyota to look, don't want to look an idiot if it turns out to be normal.

I think it could be due to an electronic throttle. It doesn't open as fast as you stick your foot on the floor. Her 207 does it and it drives me ****ing insane when I drive it.

A 2010 Yaris will have an electronic throttle I would imagine, that doesn't sound normal at all, you get any sticky throttle too? It is potentially dangerous so I would take it back to Toyota. They did have a massive recall not long ago because of unattended acceleration due to dodgy pedals or electronics or whatever it was.

I'll be honest, I have no idea, how would I find out, going to google to see if I can find out anyway but thought I'd ask.

Get down on your knees and look up at the top of the pedal (may need some light), is there a multi block connector going into it.

With a car this new, I suspect the throttle body or an associated sensor has gone kaput. The only real solution is to take it to Toyota.

It looks like it is an electronic throttle, ETCS-I Non contact type accelerator pedal and throttle position sensor. I'll get the car booked in for them to have a look at.

If it's easy to access, try taking the throttle body off and seeing if it's gunked up inside, 2 minutes with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush is all it'll need if it is.

...but you have to think, why would a 2010 car have a gunked up throttle body? Better to leave it to toyota, as it must still be under warranty.

It doesn't sound too normal. We've got the same car and I haven't noticed anything like that. It is an electric throttle in the yaris which I can't stand as I find its either on or off with very little graduation, however it never seems to lag.

Well the cars with Toyota who are ordering an "anti-rattle kit" for the dashboard whatever that is and comprises of? (not just expanding foam is it :)) And for the sluggish accelerator they reckon that they identified the problem as the clutch, so have ordered some sort of "clutch kit". After that's been fixed/fitted they'll then reset the fly-by-cheese accelerator which should make things better.

Good news is it will all be done under warranty :)

My missus has a 2007 Yris but with the god-awful semi auto and that thing is sloooooow to respond, borderline dangerous when exiting roundabouts sometimes!

I know what you mean, I suppose they are eco mobiles so geared towards getting the max from the go-juice, maybe the idea is that due to the lag you actually give up on accelerating and simply decide to just trundle along at 20mph thereby saving fuel?

I still don't understand what the clutch has to do with this but the women said that the technician noticed that the pedal travel was long and high?

My wifes old car the Civic had around half the power of the Yaris but was definitely more rapid, longer gearing for the lose I suppose.

A Toyota anti rattle kit is a box of various types of foam. Costs about £90 but that's all it is, foam.

I can't understand how they would diagnose the fault, as you described it, as a clutch problem, if it was a clutch the revs would be going up much faster than normal not slower. A "clutch kit" is just that, a new clutch.

As for resetting the accelerator, if that's what they told you they would be doing, it's a load of rubbish, there is nothing to reset on the accelerator.

Hmm, the previous to previous post doesn't fill me with much confidence. I never noticed the clutch slipping at all but there is one thing that the women said to me which does ring true, the car is uber-easy to stall. Not saying I'm the worlds best driver but when I drove it I found myself getting to the point where the car would nearly stall when moving off which at the time I attributed to not being familiar with the car.
