System Spec:

CPU: i7 3770k
Heatsink and Fan: Corsair H60 watercooler
MB: z77 Asus Sabertooth
Ram: corsair vengeance 32gb (4 sticks) 1866Mhz
PSU: XFX 850w
GPU: 2x XFX 6870

Ok so my overclocking experience is very little, up until a few months ago I was a complete AMD fanboy and had stuck with a Phenom II 965.

As it stands my CPU is running at 4.4Ghz, 1.296v. Now although this may look ok, it seems that my system doesnt like to go any lower in terms of volts and some sites suggest that going above 1.3v will start to kill the CPU. My temperatures seem to suggest everything is fine with this setup getting to medium to high 70 degrees when on full load.

Now the main issue is what am I doing wrong that I need such a huge amount of volts to get the cpu to work without issues. with the current volts im using really affect my cpu lifespan/degredation? can I go higher? should I be able to go higher.

The Corsair H60 review stated that it does perform better than high end air cooling so im trying to get my system to be around a comparable air setup (around 4.6-4.7).

If needed I can post screenshots, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

That voltage is normal for the overclock you are running. As long as you keep the cpu cool (80C or less) when stressed it will be fine.

I run mine at 4.5 @ 1.32V.

Pretty much in agreement with mattup here, theese chips are known hot runners on water or air cooling. Running mine at 4.5ghz, 1.31v. Maxes at 75c in intel burn test, mid 60's in game. Air cooled with an alpenfohn k2. The corsair all in one coolers are generally on a par with high end air coolers.

Cheers for the quick replies guys, so going over 1.3 isnt a bad thing then? may even try my hand at a 4.6 after all. are there any other settings i should look out for? I saw some people say LLC tweaks will help?

Temps will be your limiting factor with these chips.

I wouldn't worry about anything under 1.35v just watch your temps and ensure that they stay less than 80 when running prime etc.

LLC will just offset voltage drop, set it so when fully loaded the cpu stays stable with the minimum voltage required.

Cheers

Going over 1.3 isn't bad atall.. Try to keep under 1.38 (though i think it's been revised to 1.4).

LLC will balance your Vdroop.. So, say you have 1.300 at idle and under load it goes down to 1.270.. If you raise you LLC level it should even out. Possibly 1.310 idle and 1.300 under load..

High is a good setting for LLC :)

My 3770k is running at 4.5ghz with 1.285V, using air cooler (A70 from corsair), temps while gaming max are around 70C, running stability check programs it can reach something near 80C

ok while doing a test at 4.5 I am reaching temps of 83C, is that ok or am I going a bit too far? bearing in mind going above 70C was a no no for AMD.

It is ok... under 95 everything is ok for it (but you should not reach that with proper cooling)
If i'm not wrong the throttling temp is around 105C

I have a 3770k also and ive been trying for weeks to hit 4.7. today I got 4.7 with the voltage SET to 1.52 and base block at 100.3. the idle voltages are 1.42 @ 34-39c the volts at max load under prime are 1.36v @ 79-81c. I have gotten it stable at 4.6 easy with the Voltage SET to 1.3 volts but today I finally grew the ba*** to up the volts to get a stable 4.7 and as far as the settings with control center it took a setting of 1.52v

Also my 2000mhz ram had to be overclocked to 2400!

I also am new to overclocking the i7 3770k witch is why im posting this here :)

To answer the original post 1.3 is Pretty safe in my eyes.
