Hi

Anyone know how I can get a reasonable return ticket fom leeds to london over a weekend? Ive checked and cant seem to find anything under about £100

How far in advance are you booking?

2 singles for specific trains might be cheaper but it does restrict you somewhat.

The £98 fare you have probably been quoted is the walkon Super Offpeak Return valid on any train except those arriving into London before about 11ish on a weekday. So you can buy it just before travel. It's a flexible ticket, hence the higher price.

Try this:

Anytime Day Single Leeds to Bradford Stations, £3.50
Offpeak Return (Route Grand Central Only) Bradford Stations to Kings Cross £72
Anytime Day Single Bradford Stations to Leeds £3.50

Total cost £79 but you can only use trains opeated by Grand Central - so thats the 1537 Bradford Interchange to Kings Cross on Friday and the 1942 Kings Cross to Bradford Interchange on Sunday night.

You've left it too late for decent advance purchase tickets sadly.

Edit: I was assuming you meant this weekend. Let us know the dates if its a different weekend.

Cheers, concert on june 17th so 16th or 17th and returning 18th or 19th, pretty flexible really...

You are in a good position for a low fare then - at the moment you'll only find high priced walk-on fares because the advance tickets are not open for those dates yet. They typically open 12 weeks before.

Check here to see when they'll open for your route:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/booking_horizons.html

As you can see nothing for East Coast beyond end of May yet, so a few weeks to wait.

So lets speculatively price it up based on last week in May.

17th June is a Monday and 19th June is a Wednesday (So not over a weekend, are your dates right?). I'll do 27th May down and 29th up for illustrative purposes.

£22.60 Advance to London, £14.60 back so just £37.20 in total. The £14.60 fare is the lowest possible direct Advance from Leeds, so your best acheivable fare if you book as soon as the dates are released is £29.20 return.

Yeh It's a Monday night concert, so if I can get there say mid day, and leave say early evening tuesday. Maybe able to stay an additional night..

Hmm, dunno why they were so much more expensive when I tried looking!

Edit, may be because I was looking at trainline and grand central sites rather than national rail..

If you want to arrive early and return 'late', try Grand Central Trains from Kings Cross.

Get a Return ticket from Kings Cross to Monkhill (Pontefract), cost around £69 return when booked online (even in advance of up to 12 weeks, the price seems around the same)

From Monkhill return to Leeds is around £4.20 off peak, or £5.50 peak. (Train every hour, takes 20mins each way)

Nothing wrong with it IME - it's a coach, if you understand that it won't be the fastest thing in the world and you generally can't wander around a lot, then it's fine. Just talk a laptop/ipod/book etc.

Taking the mega bus from London Victoria to Sheffield at 5pm on a Friday was the single worst experience of my life. I'd rather spend the £70 odd for a return train ticket than have to endure that again.

Why was it so bad, out of interest?

Obviously travelling on a Friday evening isn't going to be particularly amazing for anyone :p

The reason the price 'seems the same' is because the £69 fare is a walk-on fare which does not need to be booked either in advance or online.
