I'm a bit useless with this type of thing and the email does take me to my proper Google Account and there's nothing strange in the URL etc.
I've got what I consider to be a very strong password made up of symbols letters and numbers and really don't want to change it.
Anybody see a problem?

Nope, nothing to worry about. Someone tried and failed - Your strong password did what it's supposed to do.

Add 2-step verification. It then requires a code sent via SMS if you sign into a new computer.

I've had one of these, accoring to what I found on Google (not officially from Google though) you only get the email if they signed in (and then Google stopped them).

It shows them as signed in in the history below all your emails too.

I just changed my password incase.

Why?
I don't mind if people email me and they only have to click on my sig to get it.
If you have a valid reason then I'll take your concerns on board.

I would remove it too matey, plenty of reasons including spam bots trawling the ever expanding t'internet.
