Living with a Land Rover Defender as a daily driver: Not-quite-one-year-later.

Regulars will know that last year I decided I was bored of our reliable but dull daily family workhorse, a Toyota Estima (Previa), and bought something I have always wanted since having an old series one in the family as a kid: A Land Rover Defender. The idea being it would serve a dual roll; family daily transport and an off-road toy at weekends. So despite the warnings that it would be 'horrible to drive', unreliable, noisy, drafty etc etc I bought this 1989 Defender 110 County Station Wagon, which had been professionally installed with a later Discovery 300Tdi engine, widely regarded as one of the best engines you can have in a Defender:

Didn't take long before the modifying bug took over, so almost a year on it now looks like this:

So what's it been like as a daily driver? Noisy, drafty, not particularly comfortable, and so far I've had to fit:

- New rear propshaft due to UJ failure.
- Water pump.
- Alternator.
- Aux belt tensioner bearing.
- Steering drop-arm.
- Probably some other things I'm forgetting.

Do I regret it? Not one little bit, the things above were mainly caused by me not being fastidious enough when it came to cleaning after wading through Salisbury Plain's notoriously harsh water, which is a known killer of bearings and the like. It's dead easy to work on and parts are cheap, so that doesn't really bother me. Other than that it's been extremely reliable, always starts on the button. It's so much fun off-road and still a real 'event' to drive, my kids love it, it turns heads and gets compliments, and people tend to get out of the way on the road ;)

Would I recommend one as a daily? Well they certainly aren't for everyone, but if you aren't afraid of a spanner and don't mind something that doesn't exactly have many creature comforts then you'll be rewarded with a 'car' that has masses of character and is huge fun, and is totally usable as a daily, especially if you don't do big miles like me :)

I could probably live with the lack of performance, suspect handling, noise and general lack of refinement, but the lack of elbow room really annoys me when driving a Landy :D
 
Thanks for the write up DreXel. I'm currently trying to get a 1971 Lightweight back on the road after a far-too-long period of in the garage, in order to sell it, free some space up and get a more modern td5 Defender. The reason is that I really fancy one of the organised trips down to Morocco and into the dunes - looks like it could be a lot of fun in some fantastic scenery.

However due to the comical non-depreciation of these toys, with some 10 year old examples asking 2/3 of their original price, it will need to replace the daily driver. Frankly my current series 2a isn't great at motorway speeds - it will do 70 but your ears won't allow it. I've seen that you can put a discovery transfer box (or get the corresponding gear) to raise the gearing - but what's it like on the motorway? Are you able to get your 300tdi to 70 without feeling like you are thrashing it to bits?
 
Looks great, all those lights are a bit overkill though!

I never really need 4wd, it's either so dry that you can use 2wd or so wet that the vehicle sinks until the diffs are on the floor and you're stuck.

How much do you think you've spent transforming it?

Looks epic btw.

Probably around £1500 off the top of my head.

Sits perfectly happily at 65-70 on the motorway :)

Looks great, all those lights are a bit overkill though!

They are for night time green laning, and are pretty much essential as the headlights are useless.

If so that's even more amazing :)

Yeah, including the wheels and tyres. Thinking about it it's probably closer to £2000 actually, hard to be sure without sitting and totting it up, and selling parts that I take off has off set some of it too.
