spec me a flight back to Blighty (UK) from Taiwan

My better half is Taiwanese and is from Taichung also , well just outside Wufung.

I can vouch that Taiwan is a stunning country with equally pleasant people. As said by surfer the east coast is superb, we did a Top gear style tour on 125 scooters down there. Awesome time.
In fact we are just applying for her Perm Visa here in the UK if that fails for whatever reason I would not be to annoyed at living in Taiwan:)

Shame we have decided to come home though.

As for the guy saying its easy to learn Mandarin:o You try learning it :p

Id imagine its a hundred times easier learning it in taiwan than in the UK tho :o

The reason why its difficult to get a job here through normal channels and not as an english teacher is because the local employer has to prove that no Taiwanese citizen can do the job before giving it to a foreigner (roughly speaking).
Should be like that in the UK too tbh! all our builders/electricions send in teams of 3, 1 of 3 will speak english, barely and translate into polish for the other two, it grates hard especially as i know well trained electricians who cant find a job.

I can never understand people who haven't been to these places questioning why people wouldn't live there as uk sux etc.

Taiwan is a beautiful country, but it is very different. The climate is very hot and humid which can be less than pleasant. The people are different. The politics is very different. The level of English is poor among many people and learning mandarin is very difficult.

Basically, different doesn't equal better, just different!

Bet it is :o

Total immersion works wonders. Plus a proper language school. Yes please.

Without speaking on his behalf, his point may be to do with a lot of the Taiwanese speaking...well, Taiwanese. It's largely the same, but I've had issues countless times with my partner where they just use their own words, or apply different meanings to the same words, or freely change "n" and "r" for "l", compared to what might be considered standard Mandarin (as far as you can call anything that). Even passing through Beijing airport the other day, she had trouble making some things understood with the local staff there.

As for the ulterior motives for the women - mine knew I had no job, no money and no house when we got together, and doesn't want to live in the UK anyway, but if you can find another one for me to get paranoid about, please go ahead ;)

but surely he would pick that up if he was attending school there and learning locally?

I think a lot of western people don't or haven't yet comprehended that in a country of 1.3 billion there are going to be vastly different accents amongst it's people! Accents so different it is essentially a different language :)

I've got friends in Shanghai who found it very hard to understand people from different cities (especially out east/north) we worked in.

It's a bit odd to me as in the UK we are very used to very different accents between say a Liverpudlian and a Glaswegian, but our written word is the same, not always the case in China.

You missed the bit about paying them $$$ :(

I would have thought that it would save you more than the cost of using the service. Worst case scenario - they find a flight that costs the same as what you can find, it costs you $24 which isn't a big deal. If they can't find a better flight than what you can find you get your money back.
