Economic family diesel for a year

Will be doing around 200 miles/day and although my petrol car does 30mpg it has very low mileage and if I add 50k in one year I am sure it will depreciate significantly.

If I had to do 200 miles a day I'd be looking at stopping there all week and just coming home at weekends. 4+ hours of commuting each day just wouldn't be fun.

That's what I was thinking. You would need to be paying me such a phenomenal wage to.spend 4 hours plus of my day travelling that I'd have no worries about using my existing car (petrol or diesel) to do so.

Its got to.make more sense to get a room for during the week

Mainly to check specs and maintenance costs. I think it is more difficult to find spare parts for older engines.

I can still buy every nut, bolt and washer brand new for an engine that entered production in 1994, is used in a brand of car that have long gone bust, and is known to be reliable so rarely needing spares anyway.

I don't think you need to worry...

An older 1.9 diesel passat is probably a good option as those engines are pretty bulletproof - or possibly a Volvo of some kind. That said regardless of what car you buy at 50k miles you will need to factor 4 services, at least one set of tyres/brakes, possibly a clutch and esp going for a second hand diesel - probably a few other things that break along the way! Also a pretty epic insurance bill when you tell them you'll be doing 50k (of what I assue will be business mileage) ... That is getting on for taxi mileage!

It would help if we knew what the current car was that you don't want to put miles on. I thought that was the whole point of having a car after all? Surely having a car that you rarely use but lose money in depreciation is worse. Unless its special/exotic then surely sell the car and buy something cheap/economical that is more suited?

Reduced by how much? What prices are we talking about? Petrol will be around £25-30 + £10/day for depreciation/services etc

You should be able to get somewhere decent for that, plus you won't need to spend 4+ hours a day in the car.
