EA’s digital download service Origin has now attracted over 40m members, the publisher has confirmed.

That’s up from the 39m it had at the end of last year, GameSpot reports, with the jump likely due to the recent release of SimCity which requires Origin membership to play.

To celebrate the success EA has announced The Origin Player Appreciation Sale that sees some decent discounts on a range of software. We just picked up Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box for £2.49.

Valve’s rival Steam service logged its 50 millionth user in September of last year, meaning EA is really not that far behind – although of course the disparity between active users on both services is likely to be huge.

EA revealed earlier this week that SimCity sales had passed 1.1m units, helping Origin to its highest ever concurrent user number – 1.3m. By comparison Steam’s concurrent user record stands at 5.7m, with between 4-5m typically logged into the service at any one time

Anyone else find it really hard to believe that origin only has 10million less members then steam..

I like how they call it a " Success " yet people have been forced to use Origin to play specific games! I'd rather call it a success if people installed Origin just because they liked Origin

Steam was exactly the same.... if you buy a Steamworks game you have to install Steam... Remember Half-Life 2?

I know what you mean...

I never wanted to install origin, But I had to in the end install it to been able to play crysis 3....:(

Seems more than possible, at some point most of us would have required to use origin with BF3, Crysis 3, Mass Effect 3 & SimCity to name a few.

However the big number to watch is the concurrent user number, clearly Steam's is miles ahead as most of us load steam by default, even if we are not playing a game, its that in tune with our computer use. Origin is just not at the point yet hence the difference in the concurrent users. This will always give steam the first crack at the whip with purchase power (outside of EA Games).

I no longer have origin installed and 4 other people I played with have all taken it out and will not return to using it. But looks like it's here to stay as the games EA make games people want (for some reason) to play so are forced to do so. :(

True to a point however I'm happy to have Steam on my system and all my retro collections added as non steam games :D

EA can do no right lol... When you get 40m users on whatever service you have I'll just shout you down about that too... Oh... Wait...

It's pretty impressive, contrary to popular belief they must be making games that people want and buy and obviously Origin is acceptable for them...

Not sure why people have such a massive problem with Origin.

On the sale note, is burnout paradise any good? Any other games in the sale?

Edit: I see it is the sale that was already on :p already bought some games in the sale.

I've been forced to install both but I only actually use steam. I have never once been tempted to buy something from Origin.

They publish games people want, that's why they have people by the balls :p. The only game series I can think of that they develop is FIFA that I'd buy.

Fifa, Sims and Battlefield series...doesn't matter how good/bad Origin is or what it does, millions of people will have to use it.

Not sure Steam really has anything like those?

I'm going to put this in it's own post... What is everyone's problem with Origin?

It isn't the worst thing in the world really. I have run in to quite a few technical issues though(almost always to do with dlc!) that have not been easy to sort out thanks to their quite amazingly bad customer service.

As with everything to do with PCs I seem to be the only one who never has problems or bugs with anything lol

I have a binary angel.

Do tell Skyfall, why do you like Origin? How does Origin benefit me?

As for me, I have no tech problems with Origin whatsoever but I did when it first launched! I just hate it, don't need it, don't want it, I'm perfectly happy with Steam. Thus is the reason why all my EA games have cracked exe's :p

Unless of cause it's BF3, which I don't play anymore :/

I can buy and download my games online, it's easy to use and they have some nice sales. I've bought a few games from them cheaper or as cheap as anywhere else. Downloads are quick too.

How does that not benefit me?

A thing that has started to annoy me a bit recently, is that it seems with most EA games(though by no means exclusive to them) I have played recently, that I also have to do something else before playing...I mean take the Dragon Age games for example, I load Origin, load the game, then I have to log in to the Bioware site in order to access dlc or have other features(same with Cerberus Network for ME games).

I don't have a real problem with Origin though tbh.

But you can do the same with Steam too, and I can guarantee that if it was on steam you'd not miss Origin at all. -Skyfall
