With Maxwell now showing as a 2014 release and the cut down version of the mighty Titan coming soon, are we still going to see the 7 series released this year? Is there any point to a Kelper refresh?

Maxwell architecture, which is coming in 2014, will make use of Unified virtual memory. Maxwell should end up in GeForce 800 Series.

Next two GPUs from us: Maxwell is coming with unified virtual memory, which makes it possible for GPU operations to see the CPU memory and vice versa, so program-ability is easier. After that is Volta, which is even more energy efficient, which has a new technology called stacked DRAM.

At least it is looking healthy for a couple of years for us PC enthusiasts :)

They originally listed Keller as 2011 and it didn't appear until 2012, I'd be willing to bet good money that we see 700 series "released" in 2013 but with stock available 2014 and similar with Maxwell, not actually on shelves till effectively 2015

Or in other words, I hope my titan's last me 2 years lol

I stand by my original claim of "Nothing will be faster than a Titan for 2 years" (single core card). Of course the price we paid, I sure hope I am right :p

I do like the idea of DRAM stacking with Volta and surprised it has taken this long to jump on. No dates for that :(

Best information I've seen so far still points to a mid-year release for 700 series with one guy claiming we will see the GTX780 at tech events around may/june with an early 2H release.

EDIT: Unfortunatly no one I'd take seriously has been talking specifications but I suspect it will be a fairly underwhelming incremental update on the 600 series.

EDIT2: Also I don't have enough information at this stage to seperate what I have between 700 series and a possible 2nd SKU for titan which is also rumoured to be on a similiar timetable, but I'm fairly sure it refers to the 700 series.

where?

you say this in every thread regarding 7 series but have never once listed a source :D

Apparently E3 this year is gonna have a lot more hardware from PC gaming companies, I don't recall Nvidia ever doing a big presentation at E3 though.

2 years is a long time ...

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if an overclocked 7x series wasn't nipping on the tail of a Titan

makes me tempted to make-do with my 570 for another 6 months if thats the case - rather than splashing out 300-350 on a 7970 or 680

They are doing a big mobile gaming setup this year I believe, showing off project SHIELD again no doubt and some other stuff.

Aside from a lot of my info comes from knowing the right people to talk to on IRC, even under NDA you can usually get a bit out of them, I don't tend to mention sources on these forums as people have got a bit funny in the past even when I have backed up what I'm saying so generally I don't even bother.

Hmm... I think two years is pretty optimistic. 18 months perhaps.

The first high-end 20nm cards should beat out a Titan by somewhere in the region of 20%. As for when they appear - I think that's probably got more to do with TSMC than Nvidia / AMD. Both sides will b preparing their designs with TSMCs constantly-shifting timetable in mind.

I would expect a 7-series late this year, as a 28nm refresh, with a typical 15-20% inter-generation performance bump and a similar size die (along with 3Gb VRAM and a 384-bit interface). It's not impossible we could see a slightly larger bump though, as both AMD and Nvidia have relatively small dies that they could cram extra SPs into. I doubt the 780 / 8970 will quite match the Titan, though they might be fairly close.

TSMC made a big deal about getting their design kit out earlier than usual but whether that will actually mean these GPUs will be sooner rather than later I guess remains to be seen. Theoretically we could see 20nm GPUs not that much later than this time next year but I think thats a bit opptimistic in reality.

if Titans are a limited supply/edition

are there going to be some very disappointed owners if they have to say RMA in 1-2 years time ?

I think the depreciation will be a bigger dissapointment than possible RMA considerations. The value on them will drop off a cliff once the next proper round of GPUs appear and the performance gap closes.

you say that, but cards like the Mars II are still going for over £700 closer often to £1K a pop
whilst it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a Titan when cards only marginally slower cost a lot less, lots of people still do it

just look at 7970/7950 and 680/670
there are always those that want "the fastest" regardless of cost

My thoughts are on the next release from AMD being in Q4 of 2013 or even Q1 of 2014 and then not releasing another top card for at least 18 months. I do expect the 8xxx series to nip at Titans heels but not quite make it.

I am purely guessing though and could be miles wrong.

There are significantly more Titans than there are Mars II cards. Titans aren't really billed as "collector" items either unlike this very limited edition cards.

The resale value of Titan will drop fast as soon as something with more performance for half the price or less comes out.

I also think the notion that it's going to take 18 months for something to come out that's faster than a Titan is incredibly wishful thinking.

That's basically suggesting that it's going to take AMD nearly 3 years to come out with a chip that's only 20-30% faster 7970 since the 7900s have been out for about 14/15 months now.

That's almost to the level of delusional when it comes to wishful thinking if I'm being blunt about it.

You are entitled to your opinion, the same as I am mine. You are more than welcome to tell me I am wrong if Nvidia or AMD surpass the Titan by March of 2015.

You seem to think that the 8 series will beat the Titan by your way of thinking?
