Hey,

What are the laws regarding having a Quad bike on a public highway if it's classed as a farm vehicle?

Insurance? tax? Number plate? etc

Having issues with some old guy down the end of my mums lane blocking cars in with his quad. He's a massive bully, constantly having a go at residents and their visitors with his German Shepherd to try and intimidate people.

Would like some laws to be able to fire back at him if he tries it with me ;)

Farm tractors where the number plates do not correspond to the trailer he is towing is another one that does my head in. Surely that is the illegal?

Farmers think they have their own rules on the road.

You can use a quad (provided it's otherwise road legal) with only a full car license.

Agricultural quad bikes:

If you’re using a quad bike for agriculture, horticulture and forestry work you need toregister it*as a light agricultural vehicle. You’ll also need to get the correct ‘nil value’ tax disc and renew this every year.

Using an agricultural quad bike on the road

You can only use an agricultural quad bike on the road if travelling less than 1.5km between sites where you’re using it for agriculture, horticulture or forestry. An agricultural quad bike used on the road doesn’t need an MOT, but must be registered and licensed for road use and must have a number plate and minimum of third party insurance. It will also need lights if it’s being used on the road after dark.

Passengers

Quad bikes used as light agricultural vehicles should be made with only a driver’s seat. They aren’t allowed to carry passengers.
From .gov website.

If he is as horrible a person as you make out, and routinely drives his quad on the road I'd shop him the police in a heartbeat.

There are of course 2 sides to every story however, what's his gripe with the residents and their visitors ?

In fact they do.

THE Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 states:

“Registration plates must be fixed to all agricultural machines and trailers. Where the towing vehicle is an agricultural machine, a plate fixed on the trailer may instead of displaying the registration mark of the towing vehicle, display the mark of any other agricultural machine kept by the keeper of the towing vehicle.”

That is very hard to do when you can be pulling different trailers all the time. during harvest i could be pulling 5 different trailers due to leaving one in field and picking up full one.

and there could be 4 other tractors.......
