This might seem a mystifying stupid question but I am going to ask anyway.
Soon I will be in the market for a new family saloon type car, currently I drive a 207, before that a 206, first one I kept 6 years, current car will be 6 soon also. Back in the day manufactured recommended retail costs were made up figures bearing no relation to what one might actually pay for a vehicle. Similar to how TVs seem to be priced now, RRP £1500, available for £1250 in every single store.
Is this still the same with cars? Or might one be expected to pay close to the RRP now? (new car, obviously I will finance the purchase, but a price would have to be agree first, yes?)

Having just read a review of the Skoda Octavia, it finished saying we liked the1.6TDI SE with the DSG gearbox, which is £20,490 on the road. Is this how much such a car would cost?

How much is a similar mondeo now? Or an audi A6?
Are they all costing their RRPs new?

It really depends on the car. Brand new model with a waiting list, you might end up paying list price. Model due to be replaced in 6 months sold from stock one month before the new plates come out, you could pay a fair chunk less.

As a starter for 10 I'd consider looking up the What Car (or is it Which?) target prices.

I would also consider a 6-24 month old car, it'll cost significantly less in depreciation even if you continue to change once the car gets to 6 years old. It'll mean a 'new' car every 4 years instead of 6 and it will cost you less.

I will be looking at the 6 month options if I find any available. We are in Norn Iron, so we don't tend to suffer from the same issues with plates changing letter or number here, they always had their own random system.

Or floating down the Bann in one ;)

Anyway back to OP, how close to list do the likes pf a mondeo or an audi a6 sell for?

In England it varies massively depending on a number of totally unique variables.

Something like a RR Evoque with an 18 month waiting list you'll probably pay very close or the exact RRP.

The Mondeo is due to be replaced soon, add in the fact that it's a Ford and they are known to discount. You could probably reasonably expect to knock a significant amount off the RRP (£1000+).

Other variables will include time of the month and year (if a dealer needs sales to meet targets they may knock more off to make the sale) and who you are dealing with.

This is all only in England of course, I've no experience of dealers in 'Norn Iron'.
