Morning All,

I'm currently planning an upgrade in order to help make my system future-proof for the next 2 years. By 'future-proof' I mean being able to play the latest game titles without issues at a 1080p resolution @ 60FPS with the possibility of moving towards a 120hz monitor at the end of the year. So some added Hmmph wouldn't go amiss.

My current systems specs are:

ASUS Rampage IV Maximus
i7 2700 @ 4.6ghz
16GB DDR3 Ram
MSI GTX 680
120GB Crucial M4 SSD
1TB SATA HD
2 x BenQ GL2420 Monitors
OCZ ZX 850 Gold Rated PSU
Steelseries Soundcard and Siberia v2 Headphones

I currently have a budget for the upgrade of around £450 to £500. I'm debating moving towards an SLI 680 setup. My MSI card is currently retailing at £400, but I've seen small price drops here and there making it £360/370. I'm also in belief that my current PSU would be able to handle the SLI power request.

I don't personally think the 680 standalone card will hold up towards the end of 2 years from now. In regards to the 690 or Titan as an upgrade, that's too much money.

I don't believe we are expecting the 7000 series from Nvidia anytime this year (release anyway).

I'm not into the triple monitor surround gaming experience, and don't have the desk space available anyway.

What would you do? Am I overlooking the other parts of my system?

Thanks,

Sean

if your not struggling now, wait.

Going SLI is your best upgrade path.

Wait until your start to see games pummel your 680 then get another. The prices will keep on falling, especially secondhand.

By the time you start to notice the struggle a lot newer tech may be out.. You could have potentially saved some money by waiting.

That is the other option. Just to hold fire and be patient.

Yes, the SLI setup would look/make things great now but I'm imagining this is just overkill as I'm not yet using a 120hz monitor nor am I using surround visuals. When I bought my system (March 2012) the cards were £399 then. It's the same price range now, so I'd be paying the same cost for a card that's been out a year.

Battlefield 4 is on the horizon and I still think I'll be able to 60 FPS that. As much as you sometimes wish to upgrade, it's not always the best choice for this moment in time.

Thanks for the sensible answers.

Prices won't really drop that much until new tech is released. Retailers will try to get rid of old stock and people will be selling cards on the cheap to upgrade to the next generation of graphics cards. Your looking at Q3 2013-Q1 2014 until prices for 6XX starts dropping significantly.

Resist the itch to upgrade.

Challenging thing to do:p I've tried many times, but failed.

OP your build is still pretty decent and imo upgrading now wont be the best value for money. I would personally wait a few more months to see what hardware is at decent prices.

Hold out, the new graphics card offerings will be sometime this year - make your decision then.

Thats along time to wait. I mean earliest is end of this year or Q1 next year.

But then again he is already using one of the top of the range graphics cards, a GTX 680. It can run Battlefield 3 at 60fps no problem.

OP is thinking of upgrading to 120mhz at the end of the year, which is when he will need the upgrade most. This is the time the next generation of GPUs will be released or announced so the timing is good.
