Anyone tell me if this is the Honda engine or the Rover engine in this 1998 416? It "looks" Honda but Carfolio states Rover :

I think only the post-95 416 Automatics had the Honda engine, whereas the manual was the K-series. Might have been something to do with difficulty/cost of developing a auto-box for the K-series...

Although another source says the Honda engine was installationally the reverse of the K-series - the tell tale being the cam bet on the passenger rather than driver's side....

The rocker cover looks Honda ish but the injector rail is defo rover Have a look on the engine block

In the picture just to the left of the LHS bolt on the exhaust heat shield there is a flat part of the block the engine number is stamped on that

MattyG OK, will do. It is an auto JonnyT perhaps tellingly, that would make sense, Carfolio insists Rover engine <95 but doesn't list the auto..

That makes sense and is in line with the other part of my post about the engine being the 'wrong' way round. The location of the cambelt on the right and the distributor cap on the left...

According to Wiki looks like it's a Honda D16B2 16v SOHC engine...

EDIT: From doing a load of googling it looks a bit like a D16B2 thats had some bits repaired with parts from the D16Y3 ? something doesn't quite add up 100%

EDIT2: http://www.civicklub.pl/forum/showthread.php?140613-rozp%F3rka-czy-podejdzie looks fairly similiar and is apparently the B2 tho wiki seems to say the 16v SOHC wasn't used (in the 416) but it doesn't look like the DOHC.

Rover 1.6 Engine Variants

Two variations of the Rover 1.6 engines were produced for the 400 series along with the 1.6 litre Honda D series SOHC. Both Rover engines were a re-engineered version of the original 1.4 K-Series 4 cylinder Engine. The increase in cc was achieved by increasing the stroke and using larger diameter cylinder liners. The Engine block was redesigned with the removal of the cylinder block's top deck and a change from "wet" liners to "damp" liners.
The Honda engine was only used in the Automatic version on the vehicle.

The Rover 1.6 engines both displace 1,588 cc(96 cu in) and are available as an 8 valve SOHC or 16 valve DOHC:- Engine Code: 16K4F(16V)

DOHC K16 16-valve, MPI, 109 hp (80 kW) DOHC K16 16-valve, MPI, 111 hp (82 kW)

this is backed up by a quick look on RAVE

**edit should also put in this is for the 95-99 model on RAVE

Definately a Honda. They spin the other way which is why the engine is the other way around in the engine bay. Definately not a Rover K-series.
