House Hunting - Areas to steer clear of?

I assume the OP is Indian or most likely Pakistani, although Asia does encompass China.

Unfortunately a minority of your ethnic group has undertaken a crappy marketing strategy this century, but surely there are areas where you can feel comfortable in the UK?

Tish & pish :p

Good to see you're still frequenting these parts mate:D

I don't want to be around just Indians, theyre nosy and flippin annoying. If an indian goes into a massive indian community then all you get is third world mentality along with an attitude where people look down at you because of how educated and professional you are and basically refer to you as a "coconut".

If there is a good mix then you tend not to get the above. We currently rent a place in Isleworth and there is a decent mix of people here unless you venture down the road to Hounslow which is a complete dive:rolleyes:

I guess really I am asking for too much. We'll get some form of racism wherever we go *shrug*

nice stereotyping there, guess if you've got that attitude then its little wonder there's racism where ever you go ;)

Right I have lived or worked in most of the areas so may be able to give you some tips

Wickford - Have a look around The Wick for houses. Not much of a high street. Everyone seems to go to Plasma for a night out. similar in terms to Chelmsford in house prices. Will probably be the fastest route into London

Chelmsford - the largest town. You won't really be stuck for things to do, quick routes into London. Houses will be quite expensive and you'll have to think how you will get to the station as it could be quite a walk to the station depending on where you live. Stay away from Melbourne Estate

Witham - Ummmm I wouldn't live here. A bit of a nothing town, a lot of council estates but quickish into London and cheaper housing

Braintree - I live here at the moment. Not the best town in the world but has a big outlet shopping village with restaurants and cinemas. Town center is full of charity shops the drunk who shouts at the fountain and supermarkets. Cheaper than Witham as it's longer to get to London on the train and only one train an hour. Many people will either drive and park at Witham (£5 a day parking) or to the park and ride at Chelmsford (about £3 I think). Look at houses in White Court, Great Notely, Notely Garden Village, Kings Park, London road, Tortoiseshell way or Marks Farm.

Colchester - I think you have been given tips about here already. Traffic can be a pain in the bum!

Some where else to think about ... South Woodham Ferrers, another town with not much going on but nicer that Braintree or Witham. Quicker into London if you get a direct train, easy to get to Chelmsford/Lakeside for shopping. Also Billericay. probably a more affluent town than the ones on your list so houses will be more expensive here (or at least on par with Chelmsford). I love the high street. Lots of independent shops as well as a few chains.

I doubt you will get much/any racism. The towns you have listed are commuter towns so will be more cosmopolitan than others.

Does it need to be a town with a train station for commuting or do you/ your wife travel there by car?

My partner and I live in South Woodham Ferrers, its a lovely place, there is a train station and the main routes out and into London are generally okay. The only down side is that it is a bit like tiny town, absolutely crammed with housing estates - not that it's a bad thing but Asda on the weekend can get crazy ;)

My wife wears the trousers so she'll be taking the car into work. Thats mainly because she starts work at 5:00pm and finishes at 1:00am.

I'll be ok getting the train, I'm no stranger to getting up at some silly hour to get the earliest train. I've had a look at the route from Braintree to Liverpool St by train and it takes about an hour. Thats ok, Ill just knock out or do some studying on the journey.

Not looked into South Woodham Ferrers. Having a browse via rightmove and liking what I'm seeing at the moment :)

Just looking at the network map for greater anglia trains and noticed that South Woodham Ferrers is on a branch line. What is the train service like around there?

I live in North Yorkshire, in a town which is something like 99.9% white. I have however friends or almost every colour and creed, and I would be surprised if any of them would describe racism as a problem or indeed if they had ever experienced racism.

I can hardly believe that you are worried about racism in such an ethnically diverse place as the South East...

No it's not :p

Whoops, considering I work in Colchester I should have caught myself on that

Train service is probably slightly more reliable and quicker than Braintree. During rush hours they do direct trains to Liv St, outside rush hour you have to change at Wickford.

Braintree is also on a branch line by they way. People always grumble about it as if there are major delays on the mainline the Braintree train is always the first train to be cancelled. Once again during rush hours they do direct trains outside rush hour you have to change at Witham.

I don't mean to put you off, either and it's not like the Braintree train is always cancelled it's just easier to drive to one of the bigger stations as you get more train options.

Have you ever noticed how much air is blended in to cheap ice cream? Pick up a tub of cheap ice cream and a tub of expensive stuff like hagendaz and feel the weight difference. The cheap one is 50% air!

:confused::confused::confused:

Tbh, i'd pick Colchester out of all of the options, but I live there. That could be bias for/against, but very frequent trains to London (Direct to Liverpool St. at rush out)

Good selection of shops etc.
