monster hunter wii u

The demo did a very poor job of show showcasing MH3 - it's epic in every way! For me at least this is comfortably the best game on the system (Wii U version), especially when gaming with friends. I hadn't played much MH before and to my surprise the game this reminds me most of is Dark/Demon Souls. The combat has that same measured pace to it, it's punishing but fair, and most importantly, it doesn't hold your hand at all. You're thrown into this weird world filled with monsters and have to work out a hundred and one things - how to use each weapon effectively, setting bait and making traps, making and upgrading weapons and armour, upgrading the farm, trading, sending out fishing boats ... and I'm only 10 hours or so in! I can see myself sinking 100s of hours into this one - it's gaming crack!

I'm going to give the demo a few more tries, really wanted to enjoy it,and it hardly seems fair me decrying the game when its likely my own failings, and lack of understanding of the game mechanics.
Will have a look on the tube for pointers.

It didn't click for me, roddy, until I found a weapon I liked. It was the long sword btw. I learnt the combos, spent a while fighting bigger monsters and packs of smaller ones to work out when best to use what, then everything feel into place. Little things like, with the long sword, pressing x and a together makes you do a forward swipe that's great for taking out enemies spread out in an arc in front of you, which I was struggling with, and then immediately does a back step, which on it's own has transformed how I fight bosses now. It's a shame the menus are so convoluted as it's easy to miss half this stuff. Now I'm learning the lance and the dual swords :)

What the demo lacks, though, is all the stuff the goes around the monster hunting - preparing your gear, stocking up etc. An npc can pass on the combination for making part of a trap in a conversation that you then go out and try. There's lots of experimenting and watching monster behaviour, which I like too. It's especially great when you drop a big beast that seemed impossible before, even more so when working with some friends.

I played the demo and thought it was crap, didn't quite understand what everyone was raving about... its a shame because I need some wiiu games...

i have bit the bullet and ordered it offline will have to wait a few days but its a tenner cheaper than the shops.

cannot wait to start it tbh now i have nearly used the demo up.
i have just tried it out with the pro pad and it seems to me the camera and player are easier to control in the heat of action. but that could just down to being used to the lay out of the buttons more.
feel free to add me my nnid is stellasuppa

Tried demo again. Spent 15m trying to get near a swimming enemy so I could hit it. Gave up on that. Tried the land one and that was better. I guess the demo doesn't do enough to give a total newcomer like me any real grasp of the game.
I'm sure I could be missing out on a great game but I've got nothing to suggest otherwise. I guess it's a price drop purchase for me, wont have anyone to play it with either.

As someone who put in at least 600 hours on Monster Hunter Tri, let me also confirm this will not be a game you can seriously sample via a demo, nor could you expect it to be a pick up and play type game.

It's a huge amount of work to get to the end game and really master each of the weapons, and sometimes a huge amount of luck is involved in trying to get the materials needed to create different types of weapons or armours.

It's a brilliant game, but you really do need to put a fair amount of time in to really see everything it has to offer.

I was kinda hoping it was like Demon/Dark Souls, quite a bit of grinding needed but still rewarding early on.

Probably the closest thing to them on the Wii/Wii u, but it still has some very big differences. It's not a level type game, you go on hunts in set areas until you complete whatever objective you have, unless it's a free hunt.

Im new to the series and enjoying it, here are some beginner vids showing the early parts of the game, might be spoilerish.

i have had mine delivered cannot wait to get stuck into this later :D

also them video above are very helpful for a new player with me not having the game till now thats all i have been watching. besides playing the not very good demo.

I was kinda hoping it was like Demon/Dark Souls

It is for me, after about 30 or so hours at least (I can tell it's a massive game already!) So far I've done no grinding other than collecting things while moving through areas and have gotten everything needed for new armour and weapons in drops from monsters. The combat reminds of Demon and Dark Souls as does the general 'you're on your own and have to work things out' feel to the game. While the differences are obvious, both games tick the same boxes for me. Best game on the Wii U by a mile too!

Those videos got to me, going to order this :)

i had the same first impression off the demo. so glad i watched some vids to see what it was really like. the demo was poor it did not explain much. the 1st 30mins of retail game explains and helps you out more.

1st game i have got for my wii u in a while so glad i did.
