Hi chaps,

I figured it might be good to start a thread in a similar vein to the 'What film did you watch last night?' thread.
The 'NP: The Now Playing Thread' thread doesn't really fit the bill in my opinion.

e.g. Give detail of what album you listened to, a score out of 10 and optionally a bit of info about what you did/didn't like about it.

I'll kick it off...

---------------

David Bowie - The Next Day. 7/10

I really enjoyed the album for the most part, however, I really felt it was at least 5 songs too long. 17 songs for an album is a heck of a lot to digest!

My favourite songs are:

  • The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
  • Where Are We Now?
  • Love Is Lost
  • (You Will) Set The World On Fire

Vestigial - Solar/Aeon. Hard to rate it yet. Maybe an 8/10.

Accomplished and quite complex dark ambient work from the Ukraine. It'll need a couple more goes before I understand what it's doing and what it's trying to transmit.

EDIT: Rated it, 7/10

Coheed and Cambria - The Afterman: Descension

9/10

Coheed have never written a bad song.

Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit.

A very important album to me on a personal level. It was released at a very positive time of my life and I have great memories of that period. It was also my entry album into black metal [along with DSO - Paracletus].

8/10

Ohh great choice withthe Agalloch!!

My last album that is new to me is the New Depech Mode album - 'Delta Machine'. 9/10. Great album.

Voivod - Nothingface. 10/10.

Glorious discordant guitar work with an element of punk, amazing musicianship. Beautiful vibes throughout and a lot going on to pay attention to.

Highlight:- Cover of Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine.

I'll rate the last one I bought, and its been a while.

Clutch - Strange Cousins From the West

Not my favourite clutch album (thats either clutch or blast tyrant) but a good solid rocker with a few standout tracks. When I listen to it I think it all segues together quite well, its more of a album lovers album than any previous clutch release.

However it kind of meshes together and its a bit of a blur. I like some tracks but theres few that have a distinct personality of their own, its all a bit samey and the same vibe going through all the songs. Which is a south american country vibe. Yup, clutch made a country album. Kinda. Its not just the acoustic guitars in the first song, theres this raggedy feeling that flows through the whole album, it sounds very "live" and like a jam.

My favourite song is "Witchdoctor" and I can't remember most of the song names off the top of my head, but thats my favourite.

Not the album to get if you're new to clutch, this is one to get if you're already a fan, newcomers should check out "Clutch", "Blast Tyrant" and "Robot Hive/Exodus".

A massive return to form after the in my opinion lacklustre "From Beale Street to Oblivion".

I'm giving it 4 stars.

Defeater - Empty Days and Sleepless Nights. 9/10.

Stonking great album. I really enjoyed the acoustic tracks. The overall theme of the album is quite unique for a hardcode/metal album too. Highly recommended! :)

I thought that album was dull as hell, to be honest. The acoustic stuff was really good, and I like that all of Defeater's work has the same unified theme, but the rest of it was just a bit pants, I thought.

Masked Intruder - Masked Intruder

Probably 7/10. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, and it's the same pop punk riffs and songs that you've heard before. But it does have a nice Beach Boys surf vibe in places, and it's all about a guy who's in love with a girl who doesn't know him. It's quite funny in places too, despite the dark subject matter.

Wendy O Williams - WOW

Now deceased punk rock girl makes hard rock/metal album with a lot of help from KISS in 1984. Excellent vocals, terribly clichéd songwriting.

5/10

I'm listening to NIN - The Fragile for the first time, almost done, love what I've heard for the most part, need a few more listens.

I've actually listened a lot to NIN's later stuff but not the best, apparently.

8/10 - just for locking me in with that opening off beat synth at the beginning.:D

Killswitch Engage - Disarm the Descent 6/10

Not quite the return to form I was hoping for. Jesse brings a new sense of credibility and passion which just about shines through, but only just - the over-production and lack of real innovation leaves it sounding too much like pop-metal. Heavy bits too fast and melodic and not heavy enough for the most part, melodic bits not quite memorable enough and might aswell be Kelly Clarkson. It's basically better than Killswitch Engage (self titled no. 2), and about on the same par with Daylight Dies - not quite as catchy but more sincere. Extremely derivative of their previous work and where that was heading though. A shame, a disappointment.

Times of Grace was better, still there's enough here to keep me interested for a bit.

e:- gotta change this to at least an 8/10. Ok there's some filler but it's an addictive listen. On reflection it's a bit better than Times of Grace, a bit more hyper. Positive lyrics too. Just the line 'I'd rather die than live in fear' is delivered with such conviction the hair raises up on back of neck.

Thee Oh Sees - The Masters Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In...

I keep saying the title in a funny voice and the first song is called block of ice and is amazing. A very hit and miss album, can't remember if its one of the main guy plebbing about or a proper album, either wait it has a funny name and some fun songs so 7/10, plus I can't wait to see them! Like a real modern day punk band and all!!

I'm late to the party and have been playing Metallica's St Anger for the first time.

The first thing you you notice is the sound. It's sludgy and unrefined. It sounds raw and dirty and a bootleg 'QOSTA' kind of way. Not entirely sure if I like it yet, but it sounds much better through a set of speakers than through headphones. It's fresh from the usual metallica style that's for sure!
