OK, so unfortunately my step-mo to be's dog passed on a week ago and she really NEEDS another dog as she has had him from a pup for 17 years. He was a brilliant little Border Terrier.

We have 2 other dogs, a Staffie/Lab cross and a pure-breed Rottweiler.

The step-mum to be has sat down and really thought about what type of dog to get and we have have narrowed it down to the following:

Alaskan Malamute
Border Collie
Pug
Westie

Yes, I know, totally different dogs... although... admittedly I want the Malamute...

Anyway, has anyone has experience with any of the 4 dogs chosen?

I used to have a Border Collie, great dog...although he did nearly bite my ear off...and my thumb...he was still an awesome dog and so smart and obedient...

And before you say anything, the 2 'dangerous' dogs are as soft as a fluffy pillow.

EDIT: If you have any other suggestions, that is awesome, as the 2 dogs we have now are not 'hers' the Staff/Lab has bonded with my dad and the Rotty has bonded with me...

Dogs are really like people, their temperament varies greatly.

Are you looking to get a puppy or an adult from a shelter?

With a puppy how you raise it is important and with an adult you'll be able to tell already and the shelter should have some info on him/her.

I've heard that Malamutes in particular are a pain to look after.

Since I was put off of Malamutes, I'm personally going to get a Bernese Mountain Dog when I can afford to keep one.

How much time do you have for exercise and mental stimulation for the dog?

HUGE fields near where we live and Dawn has 4 hours a day, mid-shift to walk and what not, also as mentioned, we have 2 dogs now to play with.

Ideally looking to get a puppy...although the Rotty was £50 from some guy that was abusing her...Dawn was told about it and she went round, saw it was being used to breed non-stop and took ownership. About 6 weeks into owning her she was bleeding heavy, everywhere, my dad knew it wasn't right so she was rushed to Nantwich Vets and was 6 hours from death...Staffy was from a home and is epically lazy and super fat...

Is Dawn actually going to make sure she uses those 4 hours for a dog and not other things? How willing and experienced is she to train the dog?

Yes, and I shall also teach the puppy to behave :D I taught my really naughty to behave and she was amazing...shame I no longer have her...

Well if you have the time to exercise and mentally stimulate a dog, a collie is a good choice, but it is a significant responsibility and if they become bored, they can become quite destructive. However, once trained, they are very rewarding dogs.

I would love to have time to dedicate to a collie.

Why would anyone in their right mind get a ******* Malamute in this country unless you plan to put it to work ALL day and keep it outside? They are not good pets at all...

I know someone with a Siberian husky in Sao Paulo, it was fat and "guarded" the house

what a stupid statement do you own or have you ever owned malamutes? if not i dont think your really qualified to judge.

my other half has a malamute/husky cross if the OP wants to know anything just ask away.

he is the most loyal dog and very protective. they learn very quickly too as they want to please their owners (Master)
