Hi guys,

I want to take my girlfriend to a show or performance in London any Saturday in April for her Birthday. Does anyone have suggestions?

She's seen We Will Rock You and loved it as she's into Queen. She also likes RNB too. Comedy wise, she loves Michael McIntyre. She also done ballet from 11-19 but I couldn't see any highly reviewed ballet on that hasn't sold out for April/May. Into the usual romantic comedies too.

Especially interested to years from anyone who has seen Stomp. Otherwise I might have to play it safe (and a little bit boring) with The Lion King. I've seen that before and it was good but I'm looking for something funny, exciting or something that will surprise her. Book of Mormons is sold out til August :( Comedy clubs might be hit and miss?

Cheers guys!

Feel free to confiscate my Man-Card, but Wicked is the best show I have seen in London.

I have also seen:

Lion King (meh)
We Will Rock You (good)
Stomp (great)
Dirty Dancing (surprisingly good)
Avenue Q (awesome!)

My opinion of you has just plummeted, massively.

The way they tied everything in to the events in The Wizard of Oz was done far better than most modern tv shows trying to weave intricate storylines. :p

Defying mavity is also a cool song, lol.

Dude, my lack of man card is gone when it comes to this subject. I've seen:

- Jersey Boys (pretty good music, if you like that era etc)
- History Boys (good story, good show)
- Grease (cheese, classic)
- Saturday Night fever (same as above)
- Rocky Horror (great laugh)
- Westside Story (I thought it was a bit meh compared to the others. OK mind)
- Cabaret (Not bad, about germans and war and singing stuff)
- Wicked! (This was fantastic. Great story and music)
- We Will Rock You (story good in this one too (Ben Elton) and obviously great music)
- Hairspray (full of preteen girls shouting the words before people on stage ruined it.)

I think I've seen a couple of others but I can't remember the names for the life of me.

I have just burned my man card.

Agree with what's already been said - Wicked is amazing. If Avenue Q was still running I'd recommend that as well.

One show that surprised me with how much I enjoyed it recently was The 39 Steps. Wasn't expecting it to be any good, but enjoyed the comedic adaptation of the book/films :)

It's alright. Definitely an interesting concept, but once you're through the first 20 minutes it becomes a tad repetitive. The Ambassador's Theatre is also very cramped and sitting through a show with no intermission in there, such as Stomp, can become uncomfortable. Also, the bar is crap and overpriced.

To echo previous comments, Wicked was fantastic and well worth a second or third viewing. The Book of Mormon looks exceptionally promising too, though my bias as a South Park fan may skew my perception - the rave reviews it has had may vindicate that bias though.

Thanks for the comments guys.

We saw the new Oz movie last week which gives some background on the sisters. She said she enjoyed it but I don't think she thought it was anything special. Is Wicked just the same story but without the wizard bits?

Completely different.

Wicked focuses on event pre-dating the Dorothy adventure, when Glinda and Elphaba where not yet good or wicked witches and in a college environment.

As the story progresses, it starts to run parallel to the events in the Dorothy story, but from a very different perspective. This is when it starts making tonnes of very clever nods to the Oz story we know, and gives further backstory to those characters.
