XBOX 720 Games to REQUIRE installation?

They are a great idea, but the main reason PS3 used them was it was a first generation Bluray drive, very slow. The drives now are faster, so 50GB games wouldnt require installations to make up for the slow speed of the drive.

Cutting down on noise I could see being a benefit, but its not going to be a requirement due to read times. It'll be something else

the 6x Blu-ray drive in the PS4 means it'll read at about 27MB/sec, that's far slower than a HDD. Considering games are going to be even bigger this time round, it makes sense to have as much of the data on a HDD as possible.

I've no problem with having to install games as I do that now anyway.
Like Danny I would have a problem with always on internet to play games.

I have no problem with the install to hard drive, actually I'd be happy with that.. the only problem I'd have is if games take up to 50GB and the console has a 500GB hard drive.. I hope they have options for drives with TB's of storage.

As for always online that doesn't bother me either as all of my consoles are connected now anyway.

I can't believe there is still no news from MS about an announcement, I thought they would do it in April :(

Would like to know who this will work as I have 2 xbox ... 1 in the living room the other in my boy room .... Don't have a prob with installing games as long as the HDD is big enough ... But as we sometimes play the same games I hope I don't have to shell out M$ points for another licence for my boy to play the game ... Ok going to take awhile to own 2 xbox720 price wise

I think it is linked to gamertag, therefore so long as your gamertag is on your boy's console the license is valid for him also.

This is how it works on PS3 anyway. You may need to download the license manually though, the first time you play it using your own gamertag on his console.

then he can use his with zero issues. If this is not the case then MS are fail.

Surely this will work exactly the same as the 360 now? Just the fact that you have to do it.

Game installs on HDD, need the disk in tray to launch the game.

I have never installed a game to my 360 HDD, and have no intention of doing so in the future.

It pee's me off that some of the older PS3 games had mandatory installs that could take up to 20 mins before you can play the game.

Having the option is fine but it should be an option nothing more.

It's all about installing games, makes your machine more quiet, longer life span on both the disc and its drive and faster loading times. More pros than cons.

I installed gears of war 3 on my xbox when i got it, sure it takes a little while, but it's only a small pain in the butt. Get in, start installing the game, make a cup of tea, take a dump and it's ready waiting for you!

You're missing out on faster loading times, and quieter operation then.

I install all my games just so I don't have to listen to the DVD spinning.

Even if this isn't true it's an inevitability anyway. I wasn't expecting them to do this soon though but it looks like they can't wait. They've wanted to do it for a long time but the technology to enforce it hasn't been available but now it can be done thanks to the Internet.

You'll have an online account and you will only be able to play a game you have a license for, exactly like Steam/Origin. The disc will merely be a transport medium and in itself be worthless without a license to play it. It could be done without having to install and just run of the disc like now. Wouldn't make a difference because you still need a license but this will make the transition to download only easier.

Not sure if i've been reading everything wrong, but I haven't actually read anything that points to the fact it will be license based.

I probably should have said a 'activation key' instead as that will tie a game to your account.

Also of note: the Durango will feature "Always On, Always Connected" online connectivity. Whether Microsoft will use the always-on functionality as a means of DRM is unclear; the documentation only mentions background updates, similar to those announced for the PlayStation 4.

That's basically what that says although I agree it's not confirmed. If it isn't then it's just be like it is now with a PS3/XBOX game that requires a mandatory install but I'm sure it's the beginning of what I said. Mandatory installs wouldn't be of any concern for the second hand market if you can just pop it in any console.
